Dear Parents & Guardians,

Over the past two weeks, I have worked with a student committee of 8th graders to plan events for this Wednesday, March 14th student walkout for raise awareness for school safety and honor the 17 victims of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. As your child’s principal, there is no issue I hold greater than working each day to keep your child safe in our school.
It is has been my primary goal during this process to balance the need for students to express their views to develop their voice on this issue and maintain a safe, orderly school environment focused on learning. In addition, our school slogan of “Lions LEAD the Way” holds my feet to the fire to make sure my decisions empower our adolescents to learn about the issues they will face in their future and make sure they are prepared to “LEAD the way,” for our community.
Therefore, our student committee and I have agreed to hold the March 14th student walkout as a learning experience for those who wish to participate. Students who participate will be gathering on the cafeteria porch at the rear of the school at 10am on Wednesday, March 14th for a 17 minute student-led assembly, supervised by our faculty and staff. Students who do not wish to participate will remain in class as normal with their teachers. In this way, we can balance the needs of those who wish to participate, those who do not, and maintain a safe, orderly school environment.
Students who follow the rules which I have sent to them directly through their BASD email will not be disciplined and will have the opportunity to participate. However, those who do not follow the rules and procedures the student committee and I have agreed to will be disciplined, such as leaving school property or leaving from the front of the school.
Please talk with your child before Wednesday about your views on this subject and encourage a dialogue about this walkout.
Thank you.
Mr. Mayes
