In September 2017, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts chose Bethlehem as the 24th site – the first in Pennsylvania – to incorporate Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child into the BASD. This program will combine existing resources, local arts organizations and the Kennedy Center to create a unique plan to enrich and expand arts education in the BASD’s elementary and middle schools.
Forming an official community arts team of twenty-five individuals from arts, philanthropy, marketing, research, business, civic, and education sectors, the Kennedy Center lead a strategic visioning and planning process to create a customized plan for arts education. The Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University leads the organization for Any Given Child Bethlehem in partnership with the Bethlehem Area School Director and the City of Bethlehem.
During an event at Nitschmann Middle School on May 7, 2019, Any Given Child Bethlehem representatives revealed plans and strategies to implement expanded arts opportunities in the Bethlehem Area schools and community, as well as unveil an updated branding and new Any Given Child Bethlehem website.
Any Given Child Bethlehem committee members, including City of Bethlehem and BASD staff, shared in the announcing of th vision and strategic plan for expanding and integrating arts into local elementary and middle schools – grades K-8.
The research is clear – students who participate in art-related activities are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. Those same students are three times more likely to win an award for school attendance and four times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem.
Attendees were also treated to some wonderful performances by Broughal Middle School Chorus, Nitschmann Middle School Band, and various art projects on display.
