Elf Dance – This Friday, December 7th from 6 – 8 PM in the cafeteria is our annual Elf Dance.  Tickets are $6 and will be sold at all lunches this week. Students are reminded to bring money with them to the dance, as there will be food, drinks, elf hats, and others items of holiday cheer for purchase.  Hope to see everyone there!

 

Student Council: It’s time to think about Holiday Shopping. Let NMS do your gift card shopping for you. See the attached order forms to order gift cards through our school. NMS earns a percentage back on each gift card ordered. Orders are due by 9am on December 4th.  The gift cards will arrive prior to our holiday break. The order form is attached to this email. You can also have your child see Mrs. Ellis for an order form.

 

Marker Collection (Novatnak) Boxes to collect used markers for recycling through the Crayola ColorCycle program have been placed on each floor.  They are located by the cafeteria TV screen and near rooms 107, 207 and 307. Markers of any brand or type (sharpies, watercolor markers, highlighters, dry erase) are eligible for the recycling program.  

 

Spain Trip (Srta. Bouhana)  We still have a few spots left that are still available. All Nitschmann students are welcome on this trip, as well as siblings who are under the age of 18 and over the age of 11 during the time of travel. Parents and siblings (at least eleven years old) are welcome to accompany their children as fellow travelers. Holiday Giving Tree- Leadership Council has adopted the “Holiday Giving Tree” as its community service project.  The “Holiday Giving Tree” is decorated with ornaments (tags) that identify the age, gender, and a holiday wish list for the child.  This project is sponsored by Northampton County and benefits children, youth, and families in our community.  The Giving Tree will be located in the library. There is a permission form (attached to this email) needed for students to take a tag (simply so we know that the parents are willing participate). Gift should be returned no later than December 12th and placed under the tree in the main lobby.

Academic Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette) Team Lafayette’s Pride of the Lions achievers are Robert Duval, Dylan Metzgar, and Stephanie Zheng.  Congratulations! Students in Mr. Ortwein’s, Mrs. Hackman, and Mrs. Evancho’s language arts classes are working on a Holidays Around the World project. This is due December 13.  Starting this week, Team Lafayette teachers and students should wear Ugly Christmas Sweaters on Fridays. This is a fun way to show our Holiday Spirit. Mid-quarter is fast approaching. Please continue to monitor your child’s progress on Parent Portal.

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh)  We would like to congratulate our Monthly Mountain Hawks:  Nathan Vella and Aaliyah Ramautar; our Mothany Decent Human Being Awards: Emma Vince, Chianti Kramer, Gianalese Fernandez and Elena Ponce; and of course our Pride of the Lions: Alyssa Marko, Connor Ohl, and Addison Sabo. Way to go Hawks. This past week we did another random act of kindness. We thanked all the Nitschmann Staff for their Commit”mint”, invest”mint”, Encourage”mint” and involve”mint” by giving each a bag of mints.  The kids really enjoyed doing this. As always please keep up to date with your child’s progress by checking in their planner and on home access center. The 2nd IPR is coming soon!

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian and Facebook @NMSTeamMoravian)  Mid-quarter is quickly approaching.  Please make sure to check Home Access Center for current grades and complete any missing assignments. Thank you to families that came for student led conferences. We appreciate your investment in your child’s education. Science projects are due 12/11, written Holiday speeches are due 12/13. Welcome to Ms. Gammel, who will be serving in Mrs. Kvacky-Baran’s position until later this school year.

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown) –  English (Mr. Falteich) – This week students will continue their Essay Writing Unit. The introductory paragraph is due Monday, 12/3. Students were shown several samples and given a sheet explaining introductory paragraphs. The intro. paragraph must contain a clear thesis statement. All students should share their paragraphs with me via a Google Doc. at cfalteich@basdschools.org.  Next week’s vocabulary lesson 8 homework is due on Thursday, 12/6. Literacy (Mrs. Gomez) – This coming week First Period will have a quiz on Victorian London on Friday, Second Period will have a vocabulary test on Thursday, and Eighth Period will have a test on chapters 19-23 of

The Lightning Thief on Wednesday.  Math (Mrs. Van Woert) – This week Periods 7 and 8 will have a unit test on Friday and Periods 1, 2, and 5 will have a quiz on Friday.  Science (Mr. Pearson) – This coming week students will learn how to write a hypothesis and how to test the hypothesis through an experiment.  We will discuss how to identify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables in an experiment. Finally, students will learn how to write a proper conclusion.

Team Penn State (7th) Follow us on social media!! (Twitter @NMSPennState) (Facebook @NMSTeamPennState) (Instagram pennstatenms) Team Penn State is starting our community “give back” project to help Victory House of Bethlehem. Students will be informed about the project in homeroom next week. Please see the attached flyer to Mr. Mayes’ email. We will be collecting items beginning now through mid- January.

UGLY SWEATER FRIDAYS – every Friday in December! BRING ON THE UGLY TEAM PENN STATE!

ELA– Students have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, December 4th. We will continue our hero unit, focusing on Jackie Robinson, in conjunction with informational writing and text dependent analysis.

SCIENCE– We will be using the microscopes to look at plant and animal cells. A lab will be done to document our observations. Cell quiz on Friday, Dec. 7 on parts and function.

MATH – Periods 1,2,5 and 7 will be working with applications of the percent equation, like percent change and percent error.  Period 8 is starting the new unit, working with algebraic expressions.

READING-    We will be reading chapters 5, 6 and 7.  Students are writing legal arguments based on the book.  We are continuing to use active reading strategies.

SOCIAL STUDIES– We will have out Midwest/ West Region quiz Friday 12/7.

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @NMSTeamESU) Reading classes will write a final essay on Manhunt/Chasing Lincoln’s Killer.  Map/Summary projects are due on Tuesday. Background knowledge on Reconstruction, Industrial Age, WWI, and The Great Depression will begin as a lead in to reading our next novel, Soldier X.

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS) –  Please be sure your child has headphones so they can work independently in class viewing the techbook videos as well as using the embedded reader tools Discovery offers.  Over the next two weeks, History classes will be looking at the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. We will be incorporating clips of the History Channel’s John Adams Series and The Sons of Liberty as well as opposing viewpoints will also be heavily targeted as we look at the Boston Massacre. Only 5 days left to bring in the Museum of the American Revolution trip form and payment – due Friday, December 7th.  Please be mindful, we have deadlines to meet as well.  In ELA this week, we will finalize our mysterious narrative accounts.  Final drafts for Periods 1, 3, 5, and 8 will be due Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8pm. We will then begin reading and analyzing a play called “Forever Dorian,” which is a based on the classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. We will also begin to study gerunds in our word crime unit. In Reading, we are continuing our nonfiction unit with Manhunt and Chasing Lincoln’s Killer. Students all have their own copy of the novels and are expected to bring them to class every day. There is a grade assigned for being responsible and bringing all materials to class. We will continue to work on citing text-based evidence and using our critical thinking skills. In periods 1,5,& 7, we are reading chapter 11 and poster projects were due on Friday. In Period 3, we are back to reading Manhunt. Students are to be reading at home in preparation for discussion in class. In Period 8, we are continuing reading in the text and working on critical thinking questions. All classes had a notebook quiz. Please continue to check your Schoology class for updates, announcements, assignments and any handouts used in ALL classes.  In Algebra 1, students will review linear transformations and sequences, and will work with Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit.  Students will have a short quiz on Wednesday or Thursday. In Grade 8 Math, students will review all 3 linear forms and will work on Interval Changes and Sketch Functions (story problems).   Students will continue to use both the IXL and Math XL programs. Please continue to check Schoology for all assignments, assessments and due dates. In Science, we will be exploring working on Counting electrons followed by Ionic and Covalent Bonding.  Please be sure your child is writing in his or her planner to stay on top of their coursework.  There is FREE HOMEWORK HELP at the Bethlehem Public Library with Moravian College and Lehigh University Students – take advantage of this!

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Parents, please note that the last Tuesday Art Smart class will be on November 27 and the last Thursday class is on November 29. Dates were extended to make up for lost classes due to conferences and the weather. Students should be picked up promptly at Nitschmann at 6:00 p.m. Also, please note that your child’s work will be included in a special exhibition at the Banana Factory! Details are below in this announcement from the Banana Factory: ArtsQuest has been delighted to have nearly 200 BASD students participate in this program at the Banana Factory. In the last several weeks we’ve observed the students engage with their classmates creatively, work with new materials, be inspired by the Banana Factory’s galleries and artist studios, and learn under the tutelage of professional teaching artists. Our goal at ArtsQuest is to provide access to the arts for all families in our community. Each time we welcome a student to the Banana Factory for the first time, we are working toward our goal. To help us celebrate the tremendous work of your talented students, please join us for theArtSmart Exhibition at our First Friday event on Friday, December 7th from 6:00 – 9:00 at the Banana Factory. ArtSmart student work will be on view in the Banana Factory’s Studio 104 and the Olympus Digital Instruction Classroom. In addition to the exhibition, we will also be hosting our monthly First Friday program, which is free and open to the public. December’s event will feature live holiday music, free art-making activities, an art scavenger hunt, and more. Light refreshments will be served.  (Art Smart classes will be offered again during the second semester. Keep your eyes open for announcements!)

 

Cheerleading (Advisor Mrs. Long) Practice Tuesday and Thursday this week!

 

Dance Team (Advisor Ms. Sierra) Practices will be during day 1 activity period on the stage and Wednesdays in the cafeteria until 5 pm. Dancers and parents will get the Remind app code which will allow for communication between Ms. Sierra, the team, and parents.  Those without a cell phone can have information go to their email.

Heart & Sole Club (Advisor Mrs. Fehr/Ms. Weinert) The fall season is complete.

French Club (Advisor Mrs. Lare) French Club meets on day 1 during activity time and is open to 7th and 8th grade students in French. Looking forward to learning about the holidays in French cultures after Thanksgiving break!

Lion Service Club (Advisor Mrs. McLaughlin) Any student interested in joining the Lion Service Club should see Mrs. McLaughlin in room 209 for information and a parent permission form. Our club will be coordinating many great volunteer and service projects such as The Clothing Closet, acknowledging special people in our school and community, etc. Please come and see what we are all about. Club starts on Wednesday, September 26th.

 

Lion’s Pride  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana/Ms. Dentith) You will have your weekly meeting on Wednesdays in Ms. Detith’s room. We will be planning out our second edition. Make sure to have your ideas ready to get us started.

 

Mathcounts (Advisor Ms. Novatnak)  This year, the Chapter Competition will be held on February 9th at Lower Macungie Middle School.  Results of the practice competition are posted on Miss Novatnak’s door. We will hold our usual Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon meetings this week.

 

National Junior Honor Society  (Advisors Mrs. Wallach/Mrs. Druckenmiller) (Twitter-@Njhs_Nistchmann; Instagram- @Njhs_Nistchmann ) Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 5, both before and after school. Members must attend ONE of these meetings. Check our Schoology group for updates and announcements. The MOD Pizza Fundraiser (Airport Road) is scheduled for December 13 all day and 20% of the profits go to us! Thanks for Anna for setting this up:) You can bring a hard copy of the flyer or an electronic copy. Hard copies will be available in homerooms and the electronic version is attached. Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher)  Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 5, from 3:05 till 4:00 P.M. in the library. The students continue to read  and write summaries for the Reading Olympics books. They are now able to check off the books as they read them in an online form on the computer. They have been showed how to do this. They can do it when we meet each week or at home Please continue to encourage your child to read, read, read and write summaries for the Reading Olympics books! Thank you!

Monday 12/3-No rehearsal

Tuesday 12/4-7:15 AM rehearsal for all Glee not in orchestra

                          3:05-4:00 Nitschmann Singers rehearsal

Wednesday 12/5-7:15 AM rehearsal for all Glee and Singers not in jazz band           

Thursday 12/6-7:15 AM rehearsal for all Glee members not in orchestra or jazz  (Band members should be at Glee.)

                          3:05-4:00 Nitschmann Singers rehearsal

Friday 12/7- Nitschmann Singers perform at  Nitschmann wreath lighting. Meet in room 141 at  7:30 AM.
