BASD E-News (Dr. Roy)  The BASD e-News is designed to highlight BASD student and staff achievements and share events and activities going on in the BASD and the Lehigh Valley. It is our hope that you find it informative. The latest edition, which highlights the Liberty High School Staff who are Built by Bethlehem, is available at February 8, 2019, Edition of the BASD e-News.

 

Snow Day Make-Up (Dr. Roy): Thursday, April 18, 2019 will be used as a snow make up day. BASD will have a regular school day 4/18/19.  As of today (02/21/19), the last student day remains 6/7/19. That date is subject to change depending on future snow days.

 

Singin’ In The Rain Jr. (Hriniak): Mark your calendar!  Performances are Friday March 1 at 7:00pm, Saturday March 2 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm, and Sunday March 3 at 2:00pm.  Tickets are on sale online and at the Nitschmann Box Office. Go to nitschmanndramatics.ludus.com for online ordering.  Tickets are $6 plus credit card processing fee.  Tickets will also be available at the box office (no fees for box office cash purchases).

 

Writing contest for No Place For Hate-  Work turned in to Ms. Sierra by March 11 will be sent together. We are delighted to announce the Anti-Defamation League’s Spring 2019 Student Essay Contest, generously sponsored by TD Bank. Respecting others’ differences and celebrating diversity have always been a part of the Anti-Defamation League’s mission and the theme of No Place for Hate. The Spring 2019 Essay Contest is asking students to write a personal essay reflecting on the following topic: Imagine that someone your age from a country with a completely different language, religion and culture than America moves into your neighborhood and joins your class at school.  What would you do to make that person feel welcome? The essay contest is open to students in grades 5-8 in No Place for Hate schools.Essays will be judged in two divisions: students in grades 5-6 in Division I and students in grades 7-8 in Division II. The Grand Prize winner in each Division will receive a $250 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card and the Runner-Up in each Division will receive a $50 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card. Honors Declarations (Mayes) Dear Parents & Guardians of 8th Grade Students, I have sent your children the link to their BASD Google account to declare that if they are interested in taking Honors courses at Liberty High School for the 2019-2020 school year. There is no paper form, so your child will need to go into a website from their BASD Google account and declare their interest. I would recommend that you talk with your child about these courses to make sure they are declaring for the right courses for 9th grade. This is due no later than March 15, 2019, so they should get started on it ASAP!

 

Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School FAST TRACK Applications are also due to Mrs. Litak in the SSC by Friday April 5th, 2019.

Academic Team Updates

 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette)  All conferences should have taken place at home if you didn’t come in.  Students should have completed their 6th grade Goal Setting sheet as well as the Parent/Student Reflection sheet.  These are due Monday in English. Midquarter ends Wednesday 2/27 so please encourage your child to review his/her grades by looking at Home Access for any missing assignments. It is cold and flu season! Any tissue donations would be greatly appreciated.  

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh)  We would like to welcome Mr. Ethan Turner, who will be filling in for Mrs. Druckenmiller for the rest of the school year.  His first day will be Monday, February 25th. We are sure the students are anxious to meet him.

 

Believe it or not we are almost half way through the 3rd marking period.  IPR’s will be available on the Home

Access Center during the week of March 4th.  Please check the Home Access Center for missing assignments and continue to monitor their planners for nightly homework assignments.

 

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian and Facebook @NMSTeamMoravian)

Mid-quarter 3 is approaching! Please make sure you and your child check the planner for daily assignments and Home Access Center for graded assignments.  Please stay on top of long term projects like the Social Studies Egypt Project. Budget your time and work on a portion each day. We have tentatively scheduled our Science Day at Moravian for March 14th. More information to follow.

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown) Team – The National Junior Honor Society is still raising money to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Money, including spare change, can be brought into homeroom and deposited in the designated box. Math (Mrs. Van Woert) – On Friday, Periods 1, 2, & 5 will have a quiz and Periods 7 & 8 will have a test.  ELA (Mr. Falteich) – This week the students will continue their study of Twelve Angry Men. There is no vocabulary quiz this week. Students should check their grades and make up any missing work. There are students who need to make up grammar and vocabulary quizzes prior to mid-quarter.

Science (Mr. Pearson) – Due to the days off and late arrivals for snow, all periods will be reviewing for the Science test on Monday and taking the test on Tuesday.  Following the test, the students will start learning about cells and how they were discovered.

 

Team Penn State (7th) Follow us on social media!! (Twitter @NMSPennState) (Facebook @NMSTeamPennState) (Instagram pennstatenms)  ELA – Periods 1, 2 & 5 will continue a poetry analysis unit. This week, we will continue to focus on civil rights poetry. We will also begin poetry writing. Periods 7 & 8 got to taste Egg Creams (based on our novel) this week and will continue the novel, Notes from the Midnight Driver. All classes will have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, February 26th. SCIENCE- Students will have a quiz on genetics on Wednesday and they will be doing a take home activity on their family traits which will be due on Friday. READING- We will be finishing their closing arguments; the papers are due on Friday.  We will finish the book and discuss the verdict. MATH – Periods 1,2,5 and 7 will have a quiz Wednesday on solving two-step equations.  Half of the credit for each problem will be for the answer and the other half will be for showing the steps.  Period 8 is finishing up the unit on equations and inequalities and will take their unit test on Wednesday. Their next unit will be about probability.   Students who correctly submitted solutions to first first question in The Hardest Math Problem contest are reminded the second question is due this Thursday, 2/28.  SOCIAL STUDIES- We will be having a map quiz on Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Monday the 11th.  Students can use Geospy (linked on their Schoology page) or their maps from class to study.

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @NMSTeamESU) History class will be covering the major events of the American Revolutionary War this week. We will discuss The Crisis, the Battle of Trenton, the Battle of Saratoga, and Valley Forge. Hershey Park Permission forms and money should be turned in as soon as possible.  Reading classes will continue into Part II of Soldier X. The students should be finished with their 1st book report of halfway through a 300 page book. All 3 book reports are due on March 27.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS) –   History classes will be looking wrapping up 5.1 and 5.2 in the Techbook on Washington’s Presidency.  We will listen(and some will sing along) to Hamilton’s Cabinet Battle #1 and #2 to put a fun twist on learning about the origins of the Two-Party political systems.  A quiz will be at the end of the week or early next week. Constitution Centers are past due. They will be still be accepted up until March 6th, at which time students will no longer be able to turn them in.  Please be sure your child has HEADPHONES with them.  This announcement to students and parents has been made since August.   Reading classes are continuing our unit on fiction. We are working on elements of fiction and analyzing fiction text. We started reading our new novel, The Contender. My period 3 class started our fiction unit and plot diagramming.  These students will have a quiz next week on fiction. All classes will have a notebook quiz next week so students should be checking their notebooks for accuracy and staying after if needed. Algebra 1 classes will work on Laws of Exponents and Solving Equations with variables as exponents.  Both IXL and Math XL assignments are posted in Schoology with due dates. Math 8th students will continue with Unit 6 – Transformations. IXL assignments are posted in Schoology with due dates. In ELA classes, Miss Nieves will now be teaching our first, third, fifth, and eighth period classes! We will be revising our compare and contrast essays in class this week.  Rough drafts are due on Tuesday, Feb. 19 for Periods 1, 3, 5, and 8, and final drafts will be due on Friday, Feb. 22. For our word crime unit, we are still practicing the difference between affect and effect and will have quiz on this concept late next week..  In Science, we will be continuing Newton’s Laws of Motion. Continue to check schoology for due dates and quiz days.    Our TEAM CELEBRATION is this Friday, March 1st!    The student driven theme is Vine/Mime Day!!!  As always, our celebration will be packed with fun-filled team activities and plenty of laughs!!! HERSHEY Park forms and money are NOW BEING COLLECTED.  IF you are paying in two installments, this Friday, March 1st – is when the 1st installment is due.

Attention All Grade Levels and Parents!!  We will soon be rolling out a new tool used elsewhere in the District to help with Career planning and College searches.  It is called Naviance. If you’ve had an older sibling at the High School, then you’ve probably heard of it. Watch your E-mail in upcoming weeks for an introduction to this very useful tool.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Parents, please mark these classes on your home calendar, and if possible, try to avoid scheduling after school appointments if your child is taking a class. Parents need to pick up their children at 6 p.m. promptly at Nitschmann’s main entrance.  Thank you.

Dance Team (Advisor Ms. Sierra) *Only students who are participating in the play will be practicing on 2/26, 2/27, and 2/28 until 5:30 pm..  The first performance for the play will be 2/28 for gr. 5.  The play is March 1 @ 7, March 2 @ 2&7, March 3 @ 2. All others will resume practice on 3/6.

French Trip to Quebec (Advisor Mr.s Lare) – Nitschmann’s first ever winter trip to Quebec was a huge success! Students participated in a variety of outdoor winter activities, learned about Québécois history & culture, explored Old Québec, and ate Québécois cuisine. Thank you to all the student travelers and their parents for supporting this amazing experience. Thank you also to Mr. Mayes, Mrs. Fritz, Ms. Weinert, and Mr. and Mrs. Hess for supporting students on this trip. Plans are already underway for Nitschmann’s next trip in 2021!

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher)  Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 27,  2018, from 3:05 till 4:00 P.M. in the library.  This will be the first time we meet as teams. Even know we had snow days the last 2 weeks, the students should still of been reading the books they had. We will still pick the three teams  and post them on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 during homeroom. They will be on the library doors. Please make sure the students check on Tuesday morning! Not all students will be participating on a team due to not reading the books.  The “pot of gold” fundraiser info will be sent home with students on Feb. 13 . Please consider donating. Ski Club (Advisors Mr. Downey)  We will meet on 2/25, this Monday, for the last time. Please arrive at 4:45 if you have lessons;  Lessons begin at 5:30. Everyone should be off the mountain by 8:30! Spain Trip (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) This is the last chance to sign up for our 8-Day trip to Spain in June before the late enrollment fee is added to the package price. We will begin our journey in Barcelona and work our way to Madrid. We will get to experience an authentic flamenco lesson, as well as one of the oldest cities in the world, Toledo. Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana)  We are meeting Tuesday after school and will be continuing our work for International Night. If you have a song or activity planned for that night, make sure to be prepared to teach it to others. We will be signing up for food items to be sold during the event, such as, empanadas, flan, churros, and taquitos. This meeting is mandatory.

6)  BASD INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC ICE-SKATING

   – Bethlehem Ice Rink – Illicks Mill Road

   – Sunday, March 17, 5-7 pm

   – Free entry for students

   – Ice skate rental – $3.00 if needed

   – Snack bar will be open

 

7) ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FIELD TRIP

   – The field trip is for string students who returned the permission slip.  

   – Students should report ot the instrumental music room at 9:00 am.  They will return around 11:30 am.

   – 7th grade students are encouraged to bring a lunch to school in the event we return later than expected.

 

8)  WINTER COLOR GUARD PERFORMANCE

   – This performance has been rescheduled for March 19 at 8 PM.

   – Students performing should report at 7 PM.

 

9) NIMAS MEETING RESCHEDULED

   – The NIMAS meeting scheduled for  2/20 has been rescheduled for Monday 2/25.

   – Mr. Long, the high school director. will be attending this meeting to speak to and answer questions from 8th grade parents.

Love to sing? Consider joining Glee Club! No formal audition  required, just a love of singing & a commitment to rehearsals. Glee Club rehearses every Tues., Wed. and Thurs. at 7:15 AM. Members of band, orchestra and jazz are excused to go to their instrumental rehearsals.  All choral ensemble members must be at 8:25 AM activity period rehearsals every day 1. Interested students should come to a morning rehearsal.

 

Please see the calendar below. Remember that if there is a bad weather delay, morning rehearsal is cancelled. If there is an early dismissal due to weather, afternoon rehearsal is cancelled.
