Dear Parents & Guardians,

During the past week, our students & English teachers have begun working with our new grades 6-8 English curriculum for the 2019-2020 school year. The StudySync curriculum resources we are using in English at all four middle schools are a new resource for teachers and students, created for middle level learners to focus on the deep reading and writing skills they will need for their future endeavors.  We are learning together how to dig deeper into these skills and provide your child with a strong set of skills to use in all content areas. The largest areas of change for our school come with scheduling double blocks of class time for English, using new online and paper materials together at the same time, and moving to a new system of grading to measure progress. Please be patient with your child’s English teacher as they adjust to these new materials and grading scheme to help your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly at pmayes@basdschools.org. You can learn more about the resource materials at https://www.studysync.com/products/ela

Thank you!

Dr. Mayes

Student Services Updates (Mr. Horlick)

Contact Members of the Student Services Team by email: Mr. Horlick, Assistant Principal; Mrs. Scott, SSC Guidance Secretary; Mrs. Falcone, SSC Attendance Secretary

Dropping Off Forgotten Items (Falcone):  We strive to encourage each student to be responsible and organized in preparation for their future high school years.  Recently there has been an increased volume of items that students have forgotten at home and parents have brought into the school for them. This has caused a decrease in class instruction time caused by frequent interruptions.  We understand some items are necessary to conduct a normal school day such as: BASD Chromebooks, eyeglasses and lunch. Items such as clothing, sports equipment and phones do not warrant interruption to the entire class. To prevent interruptions to all our students, we ask that should you decide to drop off an item, you label that item with your child’s name and grade and place the item in the designated area located within the Student Service Office.  Send your child an email at their BASD email account to remind them, please do not text or call your child during the school day, which can lead to their cell phone confiscation.

Cell Phones (Horlick) A reminder for all students & families students are permitted to have cell phones. We strongly recommend that cell phones be stored in your child’s locker. With the new Chromebook initiative, there is very little reason for students to have them throughout the day. If a cell phone is seen by a staff member or a child is found to have used it without permission throughout the day, the cell phone will be confiscated & Mr. Horlick will contact you directly.

Academic Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) We had a great first week and are looking forward to moving into content areas this week.  Ask your child how to access all of their online resources from home. Please make sure students have all needed supplies for the start of this week. Team Lafayette will visit the Book Fair on Monday, September 16th.

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  We would like to thank all of the parents who completed the Million Words assignment. We are reading all of them but this may take a while as we have close to 100 students on Team Lehigh. At this point we have settled into a nice routine and are beginning to hit our stride as far as academics and schedule. Hopefully you are at home as well. There are a few things you need to be sure of in order to promote your child’s success. All students should be spending an hour a night on school work. This works best if it a regularly scheduled time and they consistently stick to the schedule. If they finish their homework before that, they can go on IXL or read. You also need to be sure you and your child are able to access all the necessary sites (Schoology, Pearson, IXL, and McGraw-Hill) through the BASD Clever Hub. This is where you can find the homework assignments and check your child’s grades. Students are often assigned videos to watch through the Pearson site and it is important to the next day’s lesson that they watch these. Two links that you can use to access the Clever Hub are : BASD G Suite for Education (https://sites.google.com/a/basdschools.org/google/) then clicking on Clever or by going to the BASD district home page and clicking on parents/students (https://www.beth.k12.pa.us/ParentsStudents/). Lastly be sure your child has all the necessary folders, notebooks and calculators for class. They should also have a three ring binder for Lead class. Let’s work together to make this a great year!! Team Lehigh will visit the Book Fair on Tuesday, September 17th.

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis

All English classes will review discovering new words with context clues and the types of annotation.  Math (Mrs. Van Woert) – There will be a quiz for all periods on Friday, September 13th.  Science (Mr. Pearson) – This past week students learned the names and uses for various pieces of lab equipment.  This coming week students will learn proper safety procedures for the science lab. They will have a quiz on this information on Tuesday, September 17th.  Team KU will visit the Book Fair on Wednesday, September 11th.

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Miller) Students are adjusting well to the new routines and 7th grade expectations. Science:The classes will be competing to be the first to answer all the clues/codes for the equipment/safety escape room on Monday. Quiz on safety and equipment will be on Tuesday.  English: Study Sync is underway! The students have been very cooperative in learning the program and we’ve reviewed some skills such as context clues, annotation, and text dependent responses.  Math:  All classes are working on integer operations and have their first quiz on Wednesday.  Periods 2,3 and 9 will be quizzing on adding integers and the quiz for Periods 6 and 8 will be on both adding and subtracting integers. Social Studies: Classes have started the “Map Skills” unit.  All students should complete their continent quiz on schoology BY Monday  (9/9) by 3:05. Team Penn State will visit the Book Fair on Wednesday, September 11th.

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @NMSTeamESU Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8)   Please have earbuds for our video projects.  English classes will continue to develop reading and writing skills centered around The Tell-Tale Heart.  Responses to literature and peer reviews will be part of the focus. Team ESU will visit the Book Fair on Friday, September 13th. Elections for the 8th grade Executive Board of Student Council will take place on September 17th. See Mrs. Ellis for an application.

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood) History classes will take a look at leadership, the institution of slavery, and self-government in relation to the founding of Jamestown in 1607 through the use of PearDeck and primary source materials.   Students will begin working on their Iconic Image Google Slide project in connection to the historic events of September 11th. Wear patriotic colors and/or camouflage to represent our US military. Text-based evidence essays on the Lost Colony of Roanoke are due early this week.   In ELA classes this week (Wallach and Hinkel), students will begin working with the StudySync program. We will start our first unit on mysteries by reading “The Tell-Tale Heart” and learning how to navigate the program. Students will also finish their group presentations. We will then begin our next selection from the novel Monster. With all class textbooks online this year, it is ESSENTIAL that your child has a pair or two of earbuds with them daily!  Students will be able to use the text to speech feature, be able to watch videos as part of the curriculum, and create their own WeVideo projects.  Earbuds are sold at the school store if needed. Team NCC will visit the Book Fair on Friday, September 13th. Elections for the 8th grade Executive Board of Student Council will take place on September 17th. See Mrs. Ellis for an application.
