8th Grade (NMS to LHS)

1/14/20  Freshman Course Scheduling Session 1:  information for all 8th Graders (2nd & 5th periods). 

Liberty Counselors will meet with their assigned students in small groups Tuesday (14th) to provide them information on scheduling.  This is an opportunity for students to ask questions. Students will come home with a parent letter, 2019-2020 Course Offerings (to assist with selecting electives), and a Course Selection Worksheet to help with preparation.  Students will have time to review this material and the Program of Studies book during first period on Thursday, followed by grade level presentation Friday Morning. https://basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us/liberty/program-of-studies/

BASD E-News (Dr. Roy)  Happy New Year. The first edition of the BASD e-News for 2020 is available to view. It features a video about staying connected with BASD when inclement weather happens. This awesome video was produced by the students at Liberty High School in the broadcasting class with Dr. Roy making a guest appearance. It also contains a super recipe for Corn and Quinoa Salad and mentions  some current job opportunities here in BASD and summer job opportunities in the City of Bethlehem. We hope you enjoy it. Nitschmann Blood Drive (Bouhana & McLaughlin) We will be hosting our first annual blood drive on January 24 between 12:30 and 5:30pm. We will be honoring Lara Ellis and Dawn Mendez.  The link below will take you to the search page. Interested donors can search for the event by date and it will come up. We’re currently at 49 donors, and only need eight more to reach our goal of 57! You will be able to see the available times and sign up to donate. Blood Drive Search and search for the drive at Nitschmann on the 1/24.  The Red Cross is giving donors a T-shirt and coupon for Dunkin.

 

Spelling Bee (Mr. Falteich) – The Nitschmann School Spelling Bee will take place this Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. in the Nitschmann auditorium. All contestants should arrive at 5:45 for check-in and seating assignments. Congratulations and good luck to our 36 finalists!

Vaping Resources (Counselors) The popularity of e-cigarettes and vaping among students has ballooned almost out of control. The number of teens vaping grew 900 percent from 2011 to 2015. Surgeon General Jerome Adams has called it an “epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.” To address these concerns, view this new guide that covers the dangers of vaping, is vaping safer than smoking, and what parents can do. Academic Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) Team Lafayette will be completing the second Acadience test. As the end of the quarter draws near, please sit with your child and check all grades on schoology. Please encourage them to complete any missing work. Good Luck to Elias Negron, Carsten Rothbauer, Connor Terefinko, and Jack Tracey who will be representing Team Lafayette in the schoolwide Mathcounts competition on Monday!

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  We are all settling in after coming back from our long winter break and we have much to celebrate. We would like to proudly announce our December Pride of Lions: Rmani Hernandez, Denise Green, Ruben Rodriguez, and Leah Onia; and December Mountain Hawk Award winners: Anna Li and Kevin Wong. We would also like to call out several decent human beings for month of December: Theresa Cao, Michaela Deemer, Christopher Dickerson, Selman Eris, Jeniya Zayas, Daniella Arthur, and Hendrix Bromfield. In addition we would like to wish good luck to Elias Reyes, Kevin Wong, and Patrick Zheng as they compete in the Math Counts Competition on Monday, and Alexandra Vinson, Jaiden Smith, Kaedon Hall, Elias Reyes, and Jenna Omar as they compete in the school spelling bee on Tuesday.Lastly the end of the 2nd marking period is on January 23rd. Please check out your child’s grade on Schoology and have them complete any missing assignments.

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Hess) – Math (Van Woert) – There will be a Math test on Tuesday, January 14th for Periods 2, 3, 6, & 9.  ELA (Mrs. Gomez & Mr. Falteich) – Students will continue the novel, “We Beat the Street.” Setting a purpose for reading, making inferences, and prediction strategies will be applied.  

Science (Mr. Pearson) – We will continue to learn about the names of the parts of the microscope, what they are used for, and how to use the microscope itself.  There will be a quiz on the microscope on Thursday, January 23rd for all periods.

 

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Miller) THE SECOND MARKING PERIOD ENDS ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 23. PLEASE CHECK GRADES AND TURN IN ANY MISSING WORK!! Mandatory after school help (of students/parents notified) will continue on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school. Students are expected to immediately go to Mrs. Miller’s room after the 3:05 bell.  English (Getz)  Students have started Unit #3 on Study Sync – Chasing the Impossible. This week, students will begin reading the novel We Beat the Street. Science: Students will be completing, on schoology, individual learning tasks on photosynthesis and respiration as well as joining their lab group to perform activities to support the information they are learning. Social Studies: ABC projects will be due this week. Math: Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Students in Periods 2,3,and 9 are working with expressions and will be taking a short quiz mid-week on writing algebraic expressions and evaluating expressions using the order of operations.  They are also working on simplifying expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property. Periods 6 and 8 have their Unit 4 Test on Tuesday. Their next unit will be about solving equations.

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @@nmsteamesu Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8 Hershey Park money i now being collected.  Final due date for permission form and payment is March 27.  History classes will be learning about the events that led to the American Revolution: taxation, representation and human rights. English classes will continue to work on the Response to Literature essay and will continue reading the novel Soldier X.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. HoodHershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. If you have any questions about the Hershey Park trip, please feel free to email Mrs. Hood.  Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th. In History class, students will finish their inquiry lesson into whether the Boston Tea Party was an act of Vandalism or Activism.  We will also take a look at The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, comparing and contrasting the many versions in history to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s literary poem in 1861.  Clips from the History Channel’s Sons of Liberty and John Adams Documentary Mini Series will continue to supplement the curriculum. In Science class, we will be Counting Atoms and Elements. Quiz on Tues. In Math 8 classes, finishing up Scatter Plots and introducing Two Way Frequency Table.  Khan Academy assignments due 1/24. In Algebra class, finishing up Systems of Equations and introducing Systems of Inequalities. Khan Academy assignments due 1/24.  In Advance Math class, finishing up Scatter Plots and introducing Two Way Frequency Table.  Khan Academy assignments due 1/24. . In English class (Hinkel and Wallach) we are finishing unit 2 of StudySync. Please be sure to check StudySync daily for any missed or incomplete assignments. Students in the block classes will have a test on chapters 1-10 on Monday. Students should study their review questions and notes to prepare. All students have submitted their formal writing piece for this marking period based on a short story from StudySync and an interview they completed. The StudySync unit test will be next week.  Please be sure students have their own set of earbuds so they can listen to the text online and watch the content-related videos!  Please encourage your child to check Schoology for grades, assignments and future events. It is their responsibility to communicate with teachers for clarification and if an absence occurs.

AM Basketball (Mayes) Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:15am to 7:45am. All students are required to attend breakfast after practice. Doors only open at 7:15am, so do not come late!

 

Anime Club (Advisors Ms. Fehr/Mrs. WallachThe next meeting is January 23 in the large group room in the cafeteria. Please sign up on Schoology to bring treats to our Cosplay Social.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory will resume on January 28 and 30. These classes run for 8 weeks,  are free, and open to all students. Classes this semester include: Animal Painting & Sculpting, Mosaics, Mask Making, Fabric Design, Needle Felting, Digital Illustration, and Weaving. Students must commit to attending all 8 weeks of classes, and parents must be able to pick students up at Nitschmann promptly at 6:00 p.m. Sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis. If interested, please see Mrs. Lare in Room 317 to pick up information and a registration form.  Thank you.

French Club – On the first French Club meeting of the year, students learned about Epiphany and the medieval Feast of Fools tradition.  They also tested their reading comprehension in the current issue of Allons-y magazine. 

 

German Club (Advisor Mrs. Sofka) German club meets every day 1 during 1st period in Mrs. Sofka’s room 313. Our next meeting is Wednesday, 1/15.  We will be learning about and celebrating Silvester. German club is currently full due to space and is limited to Mrs. Sofka and Ms. Schwartz’s students only. Please see Mrs. Sofka if you are still interested in joining.

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201.PLease make sure you are signed up for an article on our second edition spreadsheet. We will begin working at a faster pace in order to complete articles by the given deadline, and will need to work outside of club time. 

 

Baking Contest (Lion’s Pride Newspaper) The newspaper will be hosting a baking challenge that is open to all students and the winner will receive a $30 Skyzone Gift Card. Interested students will bring in a home-made baked good on January 24th to the large group room. A panel of five teachers will taste all baked goods and cast their votes. Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Novatnak Lafey) Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  We will hold our school level competition on Monday, January 13th during periods 8 and 9 to determine which students will be representing Nitschmann at the Lehigh Valley Chapter Competition on Saturday, February 8th at Trexler Middle School in Allentown.  You will get a pass in homeroom Monday.  Students who don’t qualify can still come to practices to get stronger for next year.  The deadline for our annual Wawa fundraiser is this Thursday, 1/16. This fundraiser is crucial to pay competition registration fees in order to continue the program.  A t-shirt design was selected on Thursday, and after the meeting I called to get a price. They will be $5 each, order forms will be available on Monday.

 

National Junior Honor Society  (Advisors Mrs. Wallach/Mrs. Druckenmiller) (Twitter-@Njhs_Nitschmann; Instagram- @Njhs_Nistchmann ) Our next meeting will be after school with Terri Dressler from LLS on 1/16. All members are expected to attend. 

 

Nitschmann Dramatics (Advisor Mrs. Hriniak)  Monday and Tuesday Theatrical Makeup Clinic in Mrs. Hriniak’s classroom, Wednesday no rehearsal, Thursday all cast and crew, Friday no rehearsal.  See the email from Mrs. Hriniak for updates, calendar, and information.

 

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) (Advisor Mr. Amen)  Meeting after school Friday, January 10th.  Online registration is due on the 10th as well.  Please make sure all forms are in.

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Our first meeting in the new year will be on Wednesday, January 15th, 2020. We look forward to seeing everyone this Wednesday! The competition is on Thursday,  April 16th, 2020. We continue to meet every Wednesday after school until 4 P.M. through the end of February to read, discuss, and write summaries about the books to help us prepare for the competition.  We will be meeting until 5 P.M. in March and April up until the competition. A schedule will be sent home for the last few weeks.

Save the Sea Turtles Club (Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Thanks to a group of very ambitious 7th graders we are continuing our Save the Sea Turtles Club this year!  We will meet Fridays after school until 4pm in room 307. Guess what? Nitschmann Middle School adopted a sea turtle this summer.  His name is Gerry and he is a resident sea turtle that lives in South Padre Island, Texas. We will have the opportunity to do a virtual field trip and check in on Gerry and the other resident sea turtles.  This club is open to grades 6, 7, & 8. We look forward to a great year full of lots of ideas and putting things in action to do our part in saving sea turtles!!

Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201. We will finish our January bulletin board, and work on the remaining months of the year. Do you know a student who loves to sing? Our Glee Club family is now accepting new members for the spring! Anyone is welcome to join. The only requirement is a commitment to rehearsals as follows: 7:15 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Instrumental students are excused to go to their rehearsals, joining us on alternate mornings. All of our choral groups rehearse during day 1 activity periods. Joining Glee Club is a great way to prepare for next year’s Nitschmann Singer auditions at the end of the school year. Check out our concert dress rehearsal here:  Glee Club concert Rehearsal

1/14  TUESDAY         7:15 AM Rehearsal for Glee members not in orchestra (doors open at 7am)

        3:05-4:00 PM Singers rehearsal

1/15  WEDNESDAY  7:15 AM Rehearsal for Glee & Singers not in jazz (doors open at 7am)

        8:25 AM Activity period rehearsal for all Glee/Singers

1/16  THURSDAY     7:15 AM Rehearsal for Glee members not in band (doors open at 7am)

A reminder for all students who participate in athletics that keeping your grades up is a requirement of participating at Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty High School. Grades are check bi-weekly by Student Services. 

 

After-School Bus Transportation for Student-Athletes (5:15pm Pickup @ NMS)

Bus Run Stops for NMS Students West:  (Stops are as assigned based off the ridership) – Students MUST already receive BASD Bus Transportation home from school.
