Tier 5 Middle School Grading: Frequently-Asked Questions

Why are we using Pass/Fail course grades?

We cannot assign traditional letter grades meant to assess student performance on course content covered in a typical marking period or course since students cannot be taught to typical course standards under current COVID-19 pandemic circumstances.

The solution is to report student learning more broadly with a “Pass”. Marking Period Four and the Final Course grade(s) will both use the “Pass” grading scale.

How will my assignments be graded?

Core Subjects: Your teachers will be grading your individual assignments as before, but the Schoology Gradebook will convert assignment grades to the Tier 5 “Pass” scale. You should expect to receive ongoing feedback from your teachers about your progress.

Encore Subjects: The focus for Encore classes will be continued exploration through enrichment and review activities. Your assignments will not be graded, but ongoing qualitative feedback from your teachers about your work will be provided.

How will honor roll/GPA be impacted by Pass/Fail?

Honor Roll and GPA will not be calculated for Marking Period Four.

Will a Pass/Fail grade affect my placement in courses at the High School?

No, Marking Period Four grading will not affect any of the current course requests.

I am enrolled in BASD Cyber Academy, how will cyber course grades be calculated?

You will receive a course grade of Pass/Fail. Your course grade will not be factored into your cumulative grade point average (GPA). Please contact Mr. Mark James (mjames@basdschools.org) with any questions.
