School-wide Announcements (All Hybrid & e-Classroom Students)

Dr. Roy’s Weekly Message: This week’s edition of the BASD e-News is available to view at BASD e-News – October 30, 2020.

Student Conferences (Mayes): This year, we will be altering the student conferences to align closer with our Leader In Me school goals. For the first conferences, we will be highlighting and talking about perseverance (the ability to do something in spite of obstacles). If there is one word that describes everyone this year, it is perseverance! Students will be discussing perseverance in LEAD class prior to conferences, attend the conference to talk about their progress & answer a question about perseverance, and the work on a post-conference activity to complete the reflection for their LEAD class. Students will not be preparing a presentation for the conference time as they have done in the past. Make sure you sign up for a conference time at our scheduling website for a 10 minute block with your child’s teachers. Zoom links for conferences will be sent to your child’s BASD email account, as they should be present for the conference too. Dr. Mayes will be explaining this in greater detail at our November Town Hall webinar on Monday night.

Picture RETAKES will be held on Wednesday, November 4th, for students with the last names M-Z and Thursday, November 5th, for students with the last names A-L. Please use this link to pre-order your photos: PHOTO RETAKE PACKAGES

Core & Encore Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman)  The first marking period ends this Friday. Students should make sure they are up to date with their work and check Schoology daily. Monday and Tuesday would be great days to complete any assignments. If needed, extra help is available before/after school. Please email the teacher the day before to make arrangements and to make sure the teacher is available. Remember, sleep is an important part of your routine. Try to follow a consistent schedule on your at home days. We are noticing some sleepy students in our classes. Don’t forget to bring your computers to school fully charged. Several students are needing to charge them during school. Thank you to those who donated for the walk-a-thon and our Team Lafayette basket. It is greatly appreciated. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh/ Facebook @NitschmannTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)

We are one week out from the end of the first marking period. Tuesday we are off for Election Day. We are encouraging you to use this day to “choose” your grade (be realistic). Open your grade report and decide if this is what you want your report card to look like. If not you have the day to do something about it.  Look to see if there are things you can do to bring up any grades you are not happy with. Look for missing assignments, assignments that may not have been turned in properly, or assignments that you may be able to re-do or revise.  Take this opportunity to get your grades to where you want them to be. Only you can do this. It’s your choice.

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis)

Interim Progress Reports should have been signed and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher. If you have not done this yet, please make sure to send it this week. After school help has begun. If your child would like to stay after school for a specific subject, please have him/her email or talk to the teacher to set this up.  We are still struggling with students not completing assignments at home.  All students received an updated grade report for language arts. Assignments that were missing were highlighted.  Please review these with your child.

SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS:

Lesson schedule and Zoom inks can be found in your Schoology Activity Section 1-11 class.

This is a short video on HOW TO FIND YOUR LESSON DAY, TIME, and ZOOM LINK.

COLOR GUARD UPDATES:

Please read carefully for an important update regarding the Pep Rally.

The Pep Rally dates have been moved up a week to THURSDAY NOV. 5 and FRIDAY NOV. 6 so that the Walk-a-Thon and Pep Rally can be held on the same days.  That is next week!  We will still be performing at the pep rally.  This means we will lose a week of rehearsal time to prepare for the pep rally, and that’s okay.  We understand that the routines will not be perfect.  The important part is that we show our lion pride and have fun performing with our color guard friends.

Keep practicing at home over the weekend and on your home day on Monday.  There is no school Tuesday 11/3 due to the Teacher In-Service for Election Day, so this would be a good opportunity to check in with your section by email, text, FaceTime, Zoom, etc.

Unfortunately due to the change in dates we will probably not have our optional clothing orders in time for the pep rally.  Please plan to wear anything navy blue: a blue band shirt, a guard shirt from last year or the year before, a Nitschmann shirt, or anything blue.  Wear sneakers.  We will be outside, so plan for the weather with a navy blue sweatshirt or a long-sleeved shirt underneath a navy blue t-shirt.  You will also be doing the Walk-a-Thon on the same day, so please plan accordingly.

We will still be able to have early morning rehearsal next week, so we will have one more chance to practice with our sections before we perform.  Remember, even though there are two pep rallies you just perform at the pep rally on your school day.  If you go to school on Thursday you are in the Thursday pep rally.  If you go to school on Friday you are in the Friday pep rally.  Please do not come to school on your home day.

In case of inclement weather next week, both events will be moved to Nov. 12 and 13 (the originally scheduled dates of the pep rally).

Dress for the Weather. We are rehearsing outside, so make sure you have a sweatshirt or jacket. As the weather gets colder we will be moving into the auxiliary gym for morning rehearsals.

We will meet in the cafeteria for attendance check-in.

We will allow a few minutes at the end of rehearsal to wipe down equipment.  Equipment will be stored in the faculty cipy room.

Review basic skills, spins, and routines.

YOUTUBE Playlist of skills, spins, and routines.

There will be Fall Pep Rallies during the school day on Thursday 11/12 and Friday 11/13, and the color guard is performing in them!  You will perform in ONE pep rally–the day when you attend school.  (So Thursday students will participate in the Thursday pep rally and Friday students will perform in the Friday pep rally.  E-Classroom students, please let me know if you intend to perform with us at this time.)

For the pep rally, the color guard will be involved in the following:

National Anthem (stand at attention for present arms/salute)

Nitschmann Alma Mater (short routine/poses/equipment placements for your section)

America (the routine we learned at Summer Band Camp)

Hey Song (easy routine with your section)

The music is posted on Cut Time so you can practice at home. (On the top, click on Files/Docs, click on Color Guard, and then click on your section.)

For the pep rally plan to wear a navy blue shirt.  That could be a blue band shirt, a Color Guard logo clothing shirt (orders are due today!), a band/color guard shirt from last year or the year before, a Nitschmann shirt, a plain navy blue shirt, or another navy blue shirt with minimal writing/picture/logo.  It will be November and we will be outside, so you might want to plan ahead for the weather with a sweatshirt or a long sleeved-shirt under a t-shirt.

Once we have more details about the pep rally we will send another update email, but make sure you are practicing your routines in the meantime.

Lions/Lady Lions Athletics Updates (Twitter @NMS_Athletics)

Winter Sports (Basketball & Wrestling): Freshman Wrestling is set to begin later this month. Boys & Girls Basketball is scheduled to begin sometime after Thanksgiving. Students who played a fall sport do NOT need a new physical, just a recertification form (on our NMS website (click link). Students who did not play a fall sport need a BASD physical (click link). Free physicals are Monday 11/2 @ LHS 5-8pm and Tuesday 11/3 @FHS 5-8pm. All students need a physical to try-out for wrestling or basketball.

Year-long

Cheerleading (Head Coach Mrs. Long kllong@basdschools.org)

Anyone interested in cheerleading for NMS should attend open gym practices on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lion’s Pride. Please bring back signed intramural forms. We are still unsure of what the winter season will look like. If we can have basketball season with spectators, we will hold a tryout for NMS Cheerleading for basketball. The team is reserved only for 7th and 8th graders due to PIAA rules. If we have a cheer team for basketball, practices will be moved after school.  6th graders may attend open gym during Lion’s Pride in order to practice skills for the 2021-2022 tryout at the end of this school year. The time is also beneficial to 8th graders interested in trying out for LHS Cheerleading in the spring. In order to be a student athlete in any setting, “student” comes first! I will be checking grades on a weekly basis to ensure everyone is in good academic standing.
