The process for conferences is different this year. Please read the information below.

  • Winter Sports (Basketball & Wrestling): Freshman Wrestling is set to begin this month. Boys & Girls Middle School Basketball is scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving. Students who played a fall sport do NOT need a new physical, just a recertification form (on our NMS website (click link). Students who did not play a fall sport need a BASD physical (click link). All students MUST HAVE a physical/recert form to try-out for wrestling or basketball & STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE SURVEY SENT TO THEM TO GET TRYOUT INFORMATION!

  • In Event of a Short-Term Closure: In the event of a short-term closure due to COVID, you and your child would receive a video & information via email, BASD app, & Schoology post reviewing the short-term plans from Dr. Mayes. We are NOT expecting to use these, but have everything ready for a quick turnaround if necessary. It’s important to be prepared!

School-wide Announcements (All Hybrid & e-Classroom Students)

Dr. Roy’s Weekly Message: Did you hear that BASD is featured on the front page of The Washington Post! Check out the link to the article in this edition of the BASD e-News. This week’s edition is also super packed with up-to-date BASD COVID news including Dr. Roy’s video from today, November 13, the feedback from the BASD Parent Survey, and the change to the BASD Calendar – making Tuesday, November 24 now a fully online learning day for ALL students. Do you know a BASD senior? Check out this issue for YWCA scholarship opportunities.

BASD e-News from Dr. Roy – November 13, 2020

Student Conferences (Mayes): This year, we will be altering the student conferences to align closer with our Leader In Me school goals. For the first conferences, we will be highlighting and talking about perseverance (the ability to do something in spite of obstacles). If there is one word that describes everyone this year, it is perseverance! Students will be discussing perseverance in LEAD class prior to conferences, attend the conference to talk about their progress & answer a question about perseverance, and the work on a post-conference activity to complete the reflection for their LEAD class. Students will not be preparing a presentation for the conference time as they have done in the past. Make sure you sign up for a conference time at our scheduling website for a 10 minute block with your child’s teachers. Zoom links for conferences will be sent to your child’s BASD email account, as they should be present for the conference too.

The Annual Nitschmann Thanksgiving Food Drive has begun. Students should bring in canned goods/non- perishable food items for their homeroom’s Thanksgiving Basket. This year has been difficult for many, and New Bethany Ministries is hoping to help more needy families in the city of Bethlehem. Students may also bring in donations for turkey purchases to accompany each homeroom’s food basket donation.  *****This Thursday and Friday – (11/ 19 & 11/20) – If students bring in a non-perishable food item or a donation for turkeys, they may participate in NMS Pajama Day. Students must follow the Pajama Day guidelines established by Dr. Mayes.******

Core & Encore Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) Congratulations to our classroom spelling bee winners: Abbie Benner, Vasilios Kandianis, Murtaza Ali, Bryson Dorney, Violet Berk, Rebekah Celestin, Olivia Zsilavecz, Juan Rios, Macaden Pavlish, Jayden Molina, Kenji Payano, and Skylah Serrano.  The 6th grade level bee will be held in December, so start reading those dictionaries!   Our focus this week has been on completing and submitting work on time. It is important for students to develop a strong work ethic in middle school. This week was a great week for many in achieving that goal, while others still need to focus on work completion in a timely manner.  There will be a school-wide food drive for Thanksgiving, and we want to fill as many baskets as possible for the Team Kutztown Food Drive.  Please donate if you are able.  Lastly, the first two days of Thanksgiving Week, November 23 and 24, are at home school days.  Students will be expected to log in to Schoology to receive their assignments.  Those are also the conference dates, and we hope to see as many of you as we possible.  As always, reach out to us with any questions or concerns (we also take positive emails!) as we continue to work together to make our students their best!

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh/ Facebook @NitschmannTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)

We need to start by congratulating our October Pride of the Lions: Stella Georgalas and Ahsan Tariq. They truly model what being a Nitschmann Lion is all about

As we end the first marking period, it is time to reflect on what went well, what not so well and what lessons did we learn. The transition from elementary school to middle school is a tough one for many. In addition to the typical new friends, new teachers, new school, there is a different level of work to get used to as well. . That was compounded this year by the amount of technology that everyone had to learn to use. . That being said, aside from any of the academics, we are hoping as we close this quarter out that the students are now used to the ins and outs of the Chromebook, Schoology and all the various learning platforms that each class uses. That in itself should make the 2nd marking period a much easier go.  The other take away from the first marking period that we hope everyone came away with was to not fall behind. Falling behind not only causes  a lot of stress for the student but puts a strain on the entire family. Once you fall behind it does not take long to become so overwhelmed you do not know what to do and how to get it done.  This causes frustration on both the students and the parents parts, often resulting in arguing and tears. Learning can not take place that way!!!  Worse, it breaks down trust which is often difficult to build back.  Let’s take the opportunity of the clean slate of the 2nd Marking Period, build a routine of getting the daily work done and not falling behind. We promise you that if you can do this, you will have a much happier and successful remainder of the year.   You Got This!!!!

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis)

Congratulations to our October Pride of the Lions: Hailey Torres and Emerson Dougherty! We are proud of you!

Our students had a lot of learning to do for the first quarter. They not only transitioned to middle school, but they also learned how to use Schoology.  At this point, they should all be comfortable with the schedule and finding and submitting assignments. We look forward to a much smoother 2nd quarter with assignments completed on time.  Students should continue to look for assignments on Schoology and talk to their teachers about any questions they may have.  We have started extra help sessions before and after school. Please have your student speak with his/her teacher if interested.

Lions/Lady Lions Athletics Updates (Twitter @NMS_Athletics)

Winter Sports (Basketball & Wrestling): Freshman Wrestling is set to begin later this month. Boys & Girls Basketball is scheduled to begin sometime after Thanksgiving. Students who played a fall sport do NOT need a new physical, just a recertification form (on our NMS website (click link). Students who did not play a fall sport need a BASD physical (click link). All students need a physical to try-out for wrestling or basketball.

Year-long

Cheerleading (Head Coach Mrs. Long kllong@basdschools.org)

Anyone interested in cheerleading for NMS should attend open gym practices on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lion’s Pride. Please bring back signed intramural forms. We are still unsure of what the winter season will look like. If we can have basketball season with spectators, we will hold a tryout for NMS Cheerleading for basketball. The team is reserved only for 7th and 8th graders due to PIAA rules. If we have a cheer team for basketball, practices will be moved after school.  6th graders may attend open gym during Lion’s Pride in order to practice skills for the 2021-2022 tryout at the end of this school year. The time is also beneficial to 8th graders interested in trying out for LHS Cheerleading in the spring. In order to be a student athlete in any setting, “student” comes first! I will be checking grades on a weekly basis to ensure everyone is in good academic standing.
