  • Attendance & Zoom Class Participation during Short-Term Remote Learning: All students will be marked present each day when logging into Schoology. It is expected that all students will log into their Zoom classes on the days & times they are assigned in the schedule below. Students will be assigned participation points when joining the Zoom class & participating in the activities. Not attending Zoom classes on the days assigned will affect your child’s participation grade in each course during this quarter. If your child is too ill to participate in Zoom classes on their assigned day, please notify their homeroom teacher via email. 

 

  • Technology & Supplies Assistance for Students during Short-Term Remote Learning: If students are having an issue with their Chromebook, they should enter a request on the NMS Website at https://basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us/nitschmann/ In addition, the Student Services Office will be open daily 7:30am to 3:30pm for assistance from our office staff. 

 

  • Food Distribution during Short-Term Remote Learning: Come pick up free breakfast and lunches during the BASD Short Term Remote Learning days.  Our meal distribution sites are open Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00am to 5:00pm on December 14th,  16th,  21st, 23rd, and January 4th and 6th.  Meals can be picked up from any middle school or the following three elementary schools:  Donegan, Fountain Hill and Marvine.  Meals are FREE and available for all BASD students in addition to all children age 18 and under.  Please come and get up to 14 FREE meals for each week on us!

Tuesday-Friday Short-Term Remote Schedule for all Students (Mayes) It is important that all students (hybrid & e-Classroom) will participate in the SAME schedule during short-term remote learning period, attending live, synchronous classes on the days assigned using the schedule attached to this email

 

ALL STUDENTS A-L (hybrid & e-Classroom) will attend Zooms all day on Tuesdays & Thursday. There will be a homeroom period on December 15, 2020 for your child at 8am. Students should get the Zoom link in their Citizenship course on Schoology. All students are expected to attend. 

 

ALL STUDENTS M-Z (hybrid & e-Classroom) will attend Zooms all day on Wednesday and Friday. There will be a homeroom period on December 16, 2020 for your child at 8am. Students should get the Zoom link in their Citizenship course on Schoology. All students are expected to attend. 

Short-Term Remote Learning for ALL Students: The Bethlehem Area School District will be moving to short-term remote learning from December 14-22, 2020 and January 4-8, 2021 See the information below. Nitschmann Mask Fundraiser (Nonnemacher, Pearson, Werkheiser): The Reading Olympics team is selling Nitschmann masks.  The money raised will go towards registrations fees for the competition, team shirts, team activities, and other costs incurred throughout the year.  Masks cost $10 each and can be purchased with cash or a check made out to Nitschmann Middle School.  They will be sold on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lions Pride in the library.  In addition, we will also be selling them on Monday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 16th from 10-11 A.M. outside of Nitschmann if you would like to purchase one for a gift!  An image of what one looks like is included below.  Please help support our team this year and at the same time help yourself stay healthy.

 

Lions’ Service Club: The Lions’ Service Club is collecting used eyewear.. The eye glasses should not have broken lenses or frames. Once we collect the glasses, we will be giving them to the Lions Club who will have them reconditioned and the glasses will then be given to those in need at no cost on mission trips. There will be collection containers on each floor after the break. Please place the glasses in the containers which will be located in the common area on each floor.

The Lehigh Valley Church of Christ is sponsoring a Food Drive on December 18th. Free USDA Farmers to Families food boxes will be available on a first come first serve basis. These boxes of food include frozen meats, fresh produce, fresh dairy and a gallon of milk. All are welcomed to participate in this program.

Core & Encore Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) This week we are having our 6th grade level Spelling Bee.  The kids who won the team bees will compete Thursday and Friday to be 6th grade Spelling Bee champions.  Good luck to those spellers.  We will also be doing some art projects in class.  Please be sure to have markers and/or colored pencils for this week.  We will also be having the students work to prepare some “Covid-friendly” holiday activities for Elf Day!  Continue checking Schoology courses for classroom expectations and due dates, so you can make sure that your work is submitted on time.

Congratulations to our 6th Grade Spelling Bee Finalists: Ben Miller, Lilly Medaska, Zach Whitehouse, Chloe Ferullo, and Arman Anwari.  They will be representing the 6th grade in the school wide spelling bee at some point in the future.   The 2nd Mid Quarter is approaching very quickly.  Go on to your grade reports and see if there are any missing assignments and/or assignments that need to be re-done. If so, work on them and get all of your grades in good standing. It would be a very good idea to clear your plate heading into the temporary remote learning environment. 

 

Starting this week we will be doing all of our learning remotely.  All students (including the e-classroom students) will be expected to attend zoom sessions for each of their classes on their regularly assigned days: A-L – Tuesday, Thursday and M-Z Wednesday, Friday.  Mondays will remain as at home days with teachers being available for office hours during the afternoon.  This schedule has been gone over with all the hybrid students this past week.  If you have any questions please email us.

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Finalists: Emerson Dougherty and Katie Drabouski!  Emerson won for 6th grade overall, but both girls will  compete along with three other 6th graders, and the 7th/8th grade finalists in the school spelling bee.  The Mid quarter is approaching quickly and students should be checking their grade reports to complete any eligible missing/late assignments. 

 

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) –English (Mr. Falteich) – Students will continue to write a Text Dependent Analysis Essay. Thesis statements, transitions, and adding textual support will be 3 key focus areas. Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week we will be reviewing for the test on the Scientific Method.  After school on Friday, December 18th the test will be published and posted on Schoology.  ALL students will have from then until TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22nd to complete and submit the test.  ALL TESTS MUST BE COMPLETED & SUBMITTED BY THE END OF THE DAY ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22ND!  Math (Mrs. Evancho) Students should be bringing calculators to class every day. We will be reviewing and taking the Unit 2 assessment this week.

Email with any questions. The Zoom classes will be different, but we will persevere! We’ve got this!  ELA (Getz) – This week, we will have a virtual Kahoot review for our Unit #2 assessment. Students will complete their “Christmas Carol Interview” and take the Unit #2 test. ELA Downey– We will wrap up reading Flesh and Blood So Cheap and take a unit exam next week.  MATH: Students should be bringing their calculators to class every day.  Students periods 3,6 and 9 will be taking a unit test during their Zoom time on either Tuesday or Wednesday.  Later in the week, we will begin the next unit by reviewing how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents.  Students in periods 2 and 8 are still working with applications of the percent equation.   SCIENCE: This week we will be reviewing for our exam on the intro to life.  On Thursday and Friday, students will be taking the exam through schoology during their scheduled zoom class.

Please set up the following at home for a successful start to our short term remote learning

  • Have a quiet spot to complete your zoom calls
  • Have all your materials organized and ready in your spot: books, notebooks, pencil, laptop, etc
  • Make sure you have all your zoom links organized on the electronic schedule we gave you
  • Remove distractions in your quiet spot
  • Put away video games
  • Tv’s off
  • Put cell phones in another room
  • Create a routine for your the days you are NOT on zoom: Consider following the same time schedule as your Zoom days. 
  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule
  • Communicate with your teachers if you need help! 

History Classes: Oral History Projects are Due on December 15th or 16th. Do Not Wait to complete your project.  

Math: Continue to work on Khan Academy Folders. Be sure to check your “zeroes” and make sure you complete your work before mid-quarter

Science: Finishing up chemistry this week!

If you are only looking at the “upcoming assignments” listed in Schoology, you ARE missing additional information/assignments to complete for each class. ALL missed assignments are due by WEDNESDAY of this week.  Please contact your teacher with any questions regarding grades by Tuesday.

HISTORY – Explain why the adoption of the Declaration of Independence was an important event in the American Revolution and a necessary step in the process of achieving independence.   In Wallalch’s ELA class, we are currently reading The Outsiders.  Students will need to have their notebooks, folders, and books to our zoom lessons. Please check for updates on their learning guide.  Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class will discuss our reading of “Commencement Address to the Santa Fe Indian School.” We will also be working on a presentation assignment associated with the reading. Grammar quizzes are still scheduled for Dec. 15 and Dec. 16. . SCIENCE  Students are exploring Atoms.We will be reviewing Atoms on Tues/Weds and a  Quiz on Atoms will be Thursday/Friday. MATH:  Grade 8 Math is working on solving linear equations.  Algebra 1 students will be working with linear functions.

Family and Consumer Science – Mrs. Woodring’s 6th and 7th grade classes will be moving on to our cross stitch sewing project on Friday, November 6. Please send in $7 for the cost of the cross stitch kit in an envelope labeled with the student’s name. 

General Music/Integrated Music (de Vries)- Rotation 3 is off to a great start! Please check Schoology for Zoom times and links. Remember that encore class days and periods stay the same. Only the time of the periods change.

Engineering Design and Fabrication – Parents please check your students schedules for their rotation 2 encore class.  Any student enrolled in Engineering Design and Fabrication will need to provide their own clear safety glasses.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare) This is the last week to sign up and start Art Smart classes.  Classes will be held virtually here at Nitschmann via streaming from the professional artists at the Banana Factory.  You will need your charged laptop. Classes will be held immediately after school and include Cartoon & Anime on Tuesdays (in Mrs. Lare’s Room 317) and Mosaics on Thursday (in Mrs. Lund’s Room 011). Classes will start at 3:10 and last one hour. Students will finish in time to make the late bus.  Class size is limited so email Mrs. Lare right away if you’re interested. alare@basdschools.org  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START ART SMART AFTER THIS WEEK.

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will not meet this week in school. I will post a link for a zoom meeting on Monday in the Schoology group page. Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Novatnak Lafey) We’re still welcoming new members in grades 6, 7 and 8.

MathCounts is a nationwide mathematics enrichment and competition program.  Nitschmann has had a long tradition of success.  If you do well in math and are looking for a challenge, then you should get involved.  Students in all 3 grades are welcome to participate.  We will be meeting after school (both in person and through Zoom), alternating between Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 – 3:50.  Our sixth meeting will be Thursday, December 10th  at 3:05 in Room 213 (and on Zoom for those in the Hybrid Z and e-Classroom groups).  If you haven’t already registered on the AOPS website, please do so using the link in the Schoology group.  You need to create an account in order to participate in the competitions.

Nitschmann Dramatics (Advisor Mrs. Hriniak)    No rehearsals the week of 12/14.  See the update emails from Mrs. Hriniak for information on upcoming Zooms.  Keep doing some online research about Hairspray background topics so you have a better understanding of our show.  Listen to your music at home and read your script so you know the show forwards, backwards, and inside-out!

Photography Club: Students please continue to edit your Bokeh photos we took at the beginning of December. When you are finished editing in Pixlr, submit to Ms. Krause via email at rkrause@basdschools.org. Would be a great way to share holiday spirit on the Nitschmann Instagram page. 

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher ) During the short term remote learning, we will NOT be meeting through Zoom. Please continue to read the books and write summaries for the books on the booklist. The 2020-2021 Reading Olympics book list and summaries are  available online on Nitschmann’s website under the library. You can contact Mrs. Nonnemacher, Mr. Pearson or Mrs. Wekheiser if you have any questions. We will be selling masks on Monday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 16th from 10:00 AM – 11:00 A.M. outside of Nitschmann if anyone would like to purchase one for a holiday gift.  When we return from our short term remote learning, our  Nitschmann Mask fundraiser will continue  on  Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the Lion’s Pride period in the Library! They are $10.00 a piece. A picture of what one looks like is below.  The competition will be virtual this year on April 15th, 2021 at 3:30 P.M. VIRTUAL WINTER CONCERT

    –  It is my intent to distribute the virtual winter concert at some point this week.  There is an extreme amount of editing involved to get everything to work together.  Everyone will receive an email when the concert is ready to distribute.

 

SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS:

1) Lesson schedule and Zoom links can be found in your Schoology Activity Section 1-11 class.

2) Some necessary changes to the lesson schedule have been made.  I have emailed anyone who was affected by a change.

3) This is a short video on HOW TO FIND YOUR LESSON DAY, TIME, and ZOOM LINK.

 

COLOR GUARD UPDATES:

  • Rehearsals are before school at 7:15am on Thursdays/Fridays.
  • We are currently working on routines for the Winter Performance.
