• There is School on Monday & Tuesday!: Please see the schedule below for Monday & Tuesday this week. Both days are asynchronous with no official Zoom classes, but office hours are available. The break begins on Wednesday, December 23 through Sunday, January 3. The short-term remote learning schedule will begin again on Monday, January 4, 2021. See the Sunday Email on 1/3/21 for more information.

 

• 2nd Quarter IPRs: 2nd Quarter Interim Progress Reports (IPRs) will be mailed home to you this week. If you do not receive it or if your address has recently changed, please alert Mrs. Scott, our Student Services Guidance Secretary at sscott@basdschools.org. Letters that are returned will require two new proofs of address.

 

• Enjoy our 2020 Winter Concert Online!  The virtual winter concert can be viewed at this link. 

 

• Technology & Supplies Assistance for Students during Short-Term Remote Learning: If students are having an issue with their Chromebook, they should enter a request on the NMS Website at this link. In addition, the Student Services Office will be open daily 7:30am to 3:30pm for assistance from our office staff. 

 

• Food Distribution during Short-Term Remote Learning: Come pick up free breakfast and lunches during the BASD Short Term Remote Learning days.  Our meal distribution sites are open Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00am to 5:00pm on December  21st, 23rd, and January 4th and 6th.  Meals can be picked up from any middle school or the following three elementary schools:  Donegan, Fountain Hill, and Marvine.  Meals are FREE and available for all BASD students in addition to all children age 18 and under.  Please come and get up to 14 FREE meals for each week on us!

 

• Student 1-1 Help during Short-Term Remote Learning: If your child needs help on a day when they are not in live Zoom classes, your child can enter a help request by using the following links:

Nitschmann Mask Fundraiser (Nonnemacher, Pearson, Werkheiser): The Reading Olympics team is selling Nitschmann masks.  The money raised will go towards registrations fees for the competition, team shirts, team activities, and other costs incurred throughout the year.  Masks cost $10 each and can be purchased with cash or a check made out to Nitschmann Middle School.  They will be sold on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lions Pride in the library.  An image of what one looks like is included below.  Please help support our team this year and at the same time help yourself stay healthy.

 

Lions’ Service Club: The Lions’ Service Club is collecting used eyewear.. The eye glasses should not have broken lenses or frames. Once we collect the glasses, we will be giving them to the Lions Club who will have them reconditioned and the glasses will then be given to those in need at no cost on mission trips. There will be collection containers on each floor after the break. Please place the glasses in the containers which will be located in the common area on each floor.

The Lehigh Valley Church of Christ is sponsoring a Food Drive on December 18th. Free USDA Farmers to Families food boxes will be available on a first come first serve basis. These boxes of food include frozen meats, fresh produce, fresh dairy and a gallon of milk. All are welcomed to participate in this program.

Core & Encore Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) Thank you all for being so engaged during our first Remote Learning week.  Nothing has been easy or fun about being on Zoom meetings all day, but the dedication many of you made to be there, work, and participate was awesome.  Others need to get connected to what we are doing in the New Year.  IPRs will be coming out this week, be sure to have a conversation about the successes of the second quarter, and the “roadblocks” that keep you from being your best.  We have Monday and Tuesday as NON-Zoom days this week, but there will still be work and you need to log in to Schoology.  Continue checking Schoology courses for classroom assignments and due dates, so you can make sure that your work is submitted on time.  Lastly, congrats to Gianna Villano and Olivia Zsilavecz for moving on to the NMS Spelling Bee!

Not sure who the cruel person was who came up with this schedule, but Santa and IPR’s in the same week. That could mean bonus presents or big lumps of coal? What will be in your stocking?  If you have been doing your job, congratulations, your present is a well deserved holiday break.  If your IPR is not what it could be, your present is an opportunity to catch up and time to do what it takes to bring those grades up before the New Year.  We would love everyone to be in good standing as we enter 2021.  You can do this!!!!

 

Overall we feel week one of remote learning went well.  Attendance was very good and everyone seemed to understand the schedule.  We are very proud of you for transitioning so easily.  We will continue the same schedule when we return on January  4th. Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Finalists: Emerson Dougherty and Katie Drabouski!  Emerson won for 6th grade overall, but both girls will  compete along with three other 6th graders, and the 7th/8th grade finalists in the school spelling bee.  The Mid quarter is approaching quickly and students should be checking their grade reports to complete any eligible missing/late assignments. 

 

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) –English (Mr. Falteich) – Students will continue to write a Text Dependent Analysis Essay. Thesis statements, transitions, and adding textual support will be 3 key focus areas. Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week we will be reviewing for the test on the Scientific Method.  After school on Friday, December 18th the test will be published and posted on Schoology.  ALL students will have from then until TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22nd to complete and submit the test.  ALL TESTS MUST BE COMPLETED & SUBMITTED BY THE END OF THE DAY ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22ND!

Email with any questions. The Zoom classes will be different, but we will persevere! We’ve got this!  ELA (Getz) – This week, we will have a virtual Kahoot review for our Unit #2 assessment. Students will complete their “Christmas Carol Interview” and take the Unit #2 test. ELA Downey– Students should complete the essay for Flesh and Blood So Cheap. .  MATH: Students should be bringing their calculators to class every day.  Students periods 3,6 and 9 will be taking a unit test during their Zoom time on either Tuesday or Wednesday.  Later in the week, we will begin the next unit by reviewing how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents.  Students in periods 2 and 8 are still working with applications of the percent equation.   SCIENCE: A-L students will be taking the exam this week. They have until December 22nd at midnight to do so. I encourage them to take it during my office hours on Monday so I can answer any questions they have. M-Z students will be doing a current event assignment on Tuesday. Monday is a make up day for all students to make up missing work.

HISTORY – Explain why the adoption of the Declaration of Independence was an important event in the American Revolution and a necessary step in the process of achieving independence.   In Wallalch’s ELA class, we are currently reading The Outsiders.  Students will need to have their notebooks, folders, and books to our zoom lessons. Please check for updates on their learning guide.  Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class should finish their “Struggles to Strengths” projects related to our reading of“Commencement Address to the Santa Fe Indian School.” Projects are due Dec. 22 by 3 pm.. SCIENCE  Students are exploring Atoms.We will be reviewing Atoms on Tues/Weds and a  Quiz on Atoms will be Thursday/Friday. MATH:  Grade 8 Math is working on solving linear equations.  Algebra 1 students will be working with linear functions.  All assessments and assignments must be completed and submitted by 3:00pm on Tuesday, December 22.

Family and Consumer Science – Mrs. Woodring’s 6th and 7th grade classes will be moving on to our cross stitch sewing project on Friday, November 6. Please send in $7 for the cost of the cross stitch kit in an envelope labeled with the student’s name. 

General Music/Integrated Music (de Vries)- Rotation 3 is off to a great start! Please check Schoology for Zoom times and links. Remember that encore class days and periods stay the same. Only the time of the periods change.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare) This is the last week to sign up and start Art Smart classes.  Classes will be held virtually here at Nitschmann via streaming from the professional artists at the Banana Factory.  You will need your charged laptop. Classes will be held immediately after school and include Cartoon & Anime on Tuesdays (in Mrs. Lare’s Room 317) and Mosaics on Thursday (in Mrs. Lund’s Room 011). Classes will start at 3:10 and last one hour. Students will finish in time to make the late bus.  Class size is limited so email Mrs. Lare right away if you’re interested. alare@basdschools.org  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START ART SMART AFTER THIS WEEK.

Environmental Club (Advisor Ms. Stewart) – Greetings Students, we are launching a new club at Nitschmann that aims at educating and energizing students to live more environmentally conscious. Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Novatnak Lafey) We’re still welcoming new members in grades 6, 7 and 8.

MathCounts is a nationwide mathematics enrichment and competition program.  Nitschmann has had a long tradition of success.  If you do well in math and are looking for a challenge, then you should get involved.  Students in all 3 grades are welcome to participate.  We will be meeting after school (both in person and through Zoom), alternating between Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 – 3:50.  Our sixth meeting will be Thursday, December 10th  at 3:05 in Room 213 (and on Zoom for those in the Hybrid Z and e-Classroom groups).  If you haven’t already registered on the AOPS website, please do so using the link in the Schoology group.  You need to create an account in order to participate in the competitions.

Photography Club: Students please continue to edit your Bokeh photos we took at the beginning of December. When you are finished editing in Pixlr, submit to Ms. Krause via email at rkrause@basdschools.org. Would be a great way to share holiday spirit on the Nitschmann Instagram page. 

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher ) During the short term remote learning, we will NOT be meeting through Zoom. Please continue to read the books and write summaries for the books on the booklist. The 2020-2021 Reading Olympics book list and summaries are  available online on Nitschmann’s website under the library. You can contact Mrs. Nonnemacher, Mr. Pearson or Mrs. Wekheiser if you have any questions. We will be selling masks on Monday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 16th from 10:00 AM – 11:00 A.M. outside of Nitschmann if anyone would like to purchase one for a holiday gift.  When we return from our short term remote learning, our Nitschmann Mask fundraiser will continue  on  Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the Lion’s Pride period in the Library! They are $10.00 a piece. A picture of what one looks like is below.  The competition will be virtual this year on April 15th, 2021 at 3:30 P.M. 2) Some necessary changes to the lesson schedule have been made.  I have emailed anyone who was affected by a change.

COLOR GUARD UPDATES:

• Rehearsals are before school at 7:15am on Thursdays/Fridays.
