  • End of the 2nd Quarter: Please check your child’s grades. The end of the 2nd Quarter THIS  Friday, January 29, 2021.


  • Winter Sports: NMS Boys & Girls Basketball tryouts will begin on Monday, January 25, 2021.  All boys interested in trying out will begin at 3pm and all girls interested in trying out will begin at 4pm on Monday, January 25th.  The remainder of the week will follow the hybrid schedule and tryouts will be from 3:15pm – 4:45pm.  All students participating in tryouts will need an approved BASD physical or BASD recertification form by Friday, January 22, 2021 to be scheduled for tryouts. This form is available online on our NMS website. 


  • 5th Grade to 6th Grade NMS Orientation – Nitschmann Middle School will be hosting three parent/guardian webinars on Zoom for incoming 6th grade parents & guardians. . Please click on the date to access the link for webinar registration: January 24 @ 7pm; January 26 @ 7pm, & January 28 @ 7pm. Please share this if you know parents & guardians of incoming 6th grade students for next year.

Nitschmann Mask Fundraiser (Nonnemacher, Pearson, Werkheiser): The Reading Olympics team is selling Nitschmann masks.  The money raised will go towards registrations fees for the competition, team shirts, team activities, and other costs incurred throughout the year.  Masks cost $10 each and can be purchased with cash or a check made out to Nitschmann Middle School.  They will be sold on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lions Pride in the library, but can also be purchased anytime from Mrs. Werkheiser in the library.  An image of what one looks like is included below.  Please help support our team this year and at the same time help yourself stay healthy.

Core & Encore Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman)  The end of the quarter/semester/rotation is almost here.  We are updating what we are doing at school to make the students as successful as possible.  We have been working to solve problems with assignments, and help find ways to complete them.  As we move on to the second semester, please continue to update best practices at home as well.    Congrats to our Pride of the Lions winners, Brayden Buchman, Madison Orlicki, and Brianna Roumeliotis.   Have a great week!

Congratulations to Joseph Echevarria and Lilly Medaska on being selected as our January Pride of the Lions. We truly appreciate their hard work and the examples they set for how to be a great student!! The close of the 2nd Marking Period is Friday, January 29th.  This is the last weekend to make up work. Take the time to go on Schoology and check out your current grades. Look for missing work and/or work that needs to be re-done and re-submitted. Make a plan to catch up on that work. For those of you who have been doing your job the whole marking period, congratulations and Thank You!!!!!  Everyone Be Safe and Stay Well!!!!!

Students were given grade reports in Ms Roufakis’s and Mrs. Conley’s classes. Please make sure to look for these. We are asking that these get signed and returned to school. Ms. Roufakis is counting these signed papers as a grade…a nice bonus grade at the end of the quarter. The quarter ends soon. Please make sure that you have reviewed Schoology and grade reports and submitted any missing assignments. We are available before and after school. Talk to your teacher if you would like to work on any missing assignments during those times.

 Math (Evancho) – Reminder: All students should be bringing calculators to class with them! 

Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week students will have a quiz on the microscope which will be on Tuesday, January 26th 

(A – L); Wednesday, January 27th (M – Z); and due by Friday, January 29th (E-Classroom).  English (Mr. Falteich) Students will have an at-home test on Monday. Their Unit 2 Vocabulary Test must be completed on Monday, January 25, 2021. There will be a quiz on the parts and procedures for writing a business letter later in the week. Finally, the students will begin a grammar unit on the proper usage of difficult irregular verbs. Geography: We will be learning about the physical and human features of the west region of the United States.

ELA (Getz) – We will continue reading We Beat the Street and begin research for our WeVideo project on a social issue or an occupation. Downey(ELA) – We are reading We Beat the Street also. We are discussing conflict and social issues such as poverty.  Math:  Reminder:  All students should have their calculators with them in class every day.  Periods 3,6 and 9 are taking a quiz on Tuesday or Wednesday in school and then learning how to calculate percent change later in the week..  Periods 2 and 8 will be taking a unit test in class on Tuesday or Wednesday and then moving on to work with algebraic expressions.working with algebraic expressions We will be learning about the physical and human features of the west region of the United States. Science: We will be finishing up plants vs. animal cells and reviewing the cell organelles. Students will be taking a quiz on them later in the week. 


Team DeSales (8th) (Team Leader Mrs. Pogue):   Instagram @NMSTeamDSU8  Please be sure to check Schoology on Monday afternoon for any new assignments or course updates.

ELA: We will continue our study of poetry and start writing some of our own in Mrs. Pogue’s class. In Mrs. Tannous’s class, come ready to play a part in our reading of Monster as we study the development of character!  History classes will be studying the actions of the English Crown that led to the American Revolution. Students will be history detectives with an investigation into the events of March 5th, 1770. 


Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood)  

Team Northampton’s TEAM CELEBRATION is right around the corner! Please see previous email sent out to all parents and students.  In History, students will be focusing on the essential question of “How much power should a Government have?”  We will be going back to the late 1700’s when the Nation’s Founders produced a Constitution for the United States.  How did the leaders apply the ideals of the Declaration of Independence to create a government that has served the American  people for more than 200 years?  In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we will continue to practice our noun uses. We will also continue to work on our literature selection for this week, “Abuela Invents the Zero.” In Wallach’s ELA class, we are continuing to read The Outsiders. We are working on giving detailed responses with text-based evidence along with higher-level thinking skills. We are completing chapter 5 and working on a poem analysis of “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost. Science: We will be starting the exploration of Balanced and Unbalanced Forces. The Stations Lab and an Interactive Powerpoint will be assigned this week.  A quiz will be giving the following week.  In Grade 8 Math, students will review Proportional Relationships and learn how to find Slope and be introduced to the Slope Intercept Form.  In Algebra 1, students will review all three forms of Linear Equations and prepare for a Unit 2 Test.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  The Winter/Spring Art Smart classes from the Banana Factory are scheduled from February 9 – April 2. Classes will meet at Nitschmann after school from 3:10 – 4:10. Each course will be limited to 10 students each. On Tuesdays students may take Creative Writing and on Thursdays students may take Jewelry making. PLEASE NOTE: WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY HYBRID STUDENTS AND ECLASS STUDENTS MAY SIGN UP FOR AND JOIN THE CLASSES VIA ZOOM. Course descriptions are below:


Creative Writing with Josh Berk

“The creative writing program is called Write Now! and is offered in conjunction with the Bethlehem Area Public Library. Author/Library Josh Berk makes writing fun. Students will learn about all different types of creative writing – poetry, fiction, memoir, and more – then try their hand at each.  We will work together to publish a literary journal to share creations in a fun and creative way.” 


Jewelry and Wirework with Allison Mackenzie

“Twist, tie, wrap, and bend.”  Work with wire, leather, and beads to explore ancient jewelry making techniques with your own modern creativity. No special tools needed – everything easily made with supplied kits. This session will explore Native American wire dream catcher pendants, Nordic leather cord knotting, and Celtic inspired braided wire.”

We will be meeting after school (both in person and through Zoom), alternating between Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 – 3:50.  Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 20th at 3:05 in Room 213 (and on Zoom for those in the Hybrid A and e-Classroom groups).  There is a practice Chapter Competition that will be available from 1pm this Friday, 1/22 – 1pm this Saturday, 1/23.  We’ll talk more about that at our meeting this week.

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher)We are happy to be back and meeting Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Lion’s Pride. Our Nitschmann Mask fundraiser will continue during the time we meet.  (Mrs. Werkheiser will also sell them throughout the day in the library if you can’t make it during Lion’s Pride on a Tuesday or Wednesday) They are $10.00 a piece. Our Competition T-Shirt design contest will be in early February. We are asking students to submit their drawings / designs by the end of January. There will be a folder in the library to put them in or they can give them to one of us.  The competition will be virtual this year on April 15th, 2021 at 3:30 P.M.
