Core & Encore Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman)  The end of the quarter/semester/rotation is almost here.  We are updating what we are doing at school to make the students as successful as possible.  We have been working to solve problems with assignments, and help find ways to complete them.  As we move on to the second semester, please continue to update best practices at home as well.    Congrats to our Pride of the Lions winners, Brayden Buchman, Madison Orlicki, and Brianna Roumeliotis.   Have a great week!

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh/ Facebook @NitschmannTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver

A New Beginning:  The end of the 2nd Marking Period was Friday. That means that everyone starts off with a clean slate once again.  As we begin the 2nd half of the year it is time to reflect on what has been going well and what you may need to improve upon. As teachers, we see that many students are having a difficult time establishing a consistent schedule and work routines on their at home days. This is a good time to review those routines and  work expectations with your child. One thing that we have found is that the students who get up early and tackle their work in the morning seem to have best success as that models the routines we set for them on their in-school days as well. Consistency builds routines. For those that are struggling to get work done at home, we can arrange for them to come in before and/or after school on their at school days to give them extra time to get their assignments complete.  Please let us know if you would like your child to take advantage of this opportunity.   Everyone Be Safe and Stay Well!!!!!

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis)

We are available before and after school. Talk to your teacher if you would like to work on any assignments during those times. Please continue monitoring your grades by checking Schoology. Make sure you are looking at M3 and not the overall grade.

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) –

Math (Evancho) – Reminder: All students should be bringing calculators to class with them!

Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week students will be starting a new chapter and learn about the characteristics that all living things have in common.  English (Mr. Falteich) Students will have an at-home test on Monday. Their Unit 2 Vocabulary Test must be completed on Monday, January 25, 2021. There will be a quiz on the parts and procedures for writing a business letter later in the week. Finally, the students will begin a grammar unit on the proper usage of difficult irregular verbs. Geography: We will be learning about the physical and human features of the west region of the United States.

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Getz)

This week starts the 3rd marking period. Everyone gets to hit the reset button and start fresh!

ELA (Getz) – We will continue reading We Beat the Street and also continue research for our WeVideo project on a social issue or an occupation. Students will have a quiz on the novel (chapter 1-11) on Thursday/Friday. Downey(ELA) – We are reading We Beat the Street. We are taking notes about text structure, summarizing and foreshadowing.  Geography: We will begin to look at the physical and human features of Canada.  Math:  Reminder:  All students should have their calculators with them in class every day.  Periods 3,6 and 9 are working with applications of the percent equation, percent change and percent error.  Periods 2 and 8 are working with algebraic expressions.  Science: We will be wrapping up cell organelles with a lab where students have to look at different types of cells through a microscope and answer questions about them.

Team DeSales (8th) (Team Leader Mrs. Pogue):   Instagram @NMSTeamDSU8  Please be sure to check Schoology on Monday afternoon for any new assignments or course updates.Welcome to a new marking period and a fresh start!

In ELA: We will continue our study of poetry, continuing writing some of our own, and choose “spotlight poets” in Mrs. Pogue’s class. In Mrs. Tannous’s class, we will continue our reenactment of Monster and focus on some real life connections to the story. Also, you will have the entire week to complete your chosen vocabulary word assessment! HISTORY:  History classes will be writing historical fiction based on the Writs of Assistance and suspension of Constitutional Rights. SCIENCE: Get ready for your science on Balanced and Unbalanced Forces on Thursday and Friday! We’ll be reviewing in class, but you also have notes to review. Start the marking period off strong!

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood)

Team Northampton’s TEAM CELEBRATION is right around the corner! Please see previous email sent out to all parents and students.  In History, students will be focusing on the essential question of “How much power should a Government have?”  We will be going back to the late 1700’s when the Nation’s Founders produced a Constitution for the United States.  How did the leaders apply the ideals of the Declaration of Independence to create a government that has served the American  people for more than 200 years? Hamilton’s Cabinet Battles will be incorporated as we discussed the Anti-Federalists versus the Federalists. In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we will continue to practice our noun uses. A quiz is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 4 and Feb. 5. We will also continue working on our next reading selection, “The House on Mango Street,” focusing specifically on the figurative language in the selection.  In Wallach’s ELA class, we are continuing to read The Outsiders. We are working on giving detailed responses with text-based evidence along with higher-level thinking skills as evidenced in our analysis of “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost. We are working on chapter 6 as well as a plot comic strip to complete chapter 5.  Science: We will be continuing the exploration of Balanced and Unbalanced Forces. The Stations Lab and an Interactive Powerpoint was assigned last week.  A quiz will be Thursday and Friday.  In Grade 8 Math, students will take their  Proportional Relationship Quiz on Monday and learn how to find Slope and be introduced to the Slope Intercept Form.  In Algebra 1, students will take their Point Slope Form and Parallel/Perpendicular Quiz on Monday, and prepare for a Unit 2 Test (Thursday for A to L and E-Learners, Friday for M to Z).
