MathCounts Update:  (Lafey)

Congratulations to Stefan Christiansen who qualified to represent Nitschmann at the Chapter Invitational Competition later this month.  He ranked 14th out of students from schools throughout the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos.  Stephanie Zheng was 22nd and Carsten Rothbauer was 25th.  Great Job!

Core & Encore Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman)   We are focusing on Gods and Goddesses as well as Pharaohs of Egypt in our Social Studies classes.  We had all Hybrid students complete their IXL diagnostic, which is phenomenal!  Great job kids. “Personal Best” will be the theme for English classes.  Lastly, we are working through the unit on Space for Science.  Busy days for all!!

Congratulations to the following students for earning our Mountain Hawk Spotlight Awards this week: Abiel Gordillo-Fernandez, Destiney Green, Dylan Sparozic, Marissa Simmons. This is an award that Lehigh teachers give to students who soar above the rest! Students earn a certificate and are recognized at our team celebrations. Way to go – we are proud of you for leading the way for our team!

 

The end of the third marking period is quickly approaching!  Check your grade report in Schoology to see if all your grades are in good standing. Look not only for missing assignments, but also assignments for which you did not do well on and you may be able to remediate. This process of checking on your grades should be part of your weekend routine!!!

Please continue to check the grade report for missing assignments.  Some students need to redo math assignments because of missing work.  Team teachers are available before and after school for extra help.  If you are interested in attending, please talk to your teacher. 

 

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) – Math (Mrs. Evancho) – Reminder: All students should be bringing calculators to class with them! Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week students will continue to learn about the location, structure, and function of the different parts of a cell.  In addition, they will also learn about the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells, as well as, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.  English (Mr. Falteich) – This week students will review characterization and begin discussing courtroom terms in preparation for the class’s reading of 12 Angry Men.. Hopefully the speech will be a positive and memorable educational experience. Geography (Mr. Danyi) We will continue to learn about different European countries and the people who live there.

This week in Lion’s Pride, students will start to score their Final Four Basketball Brackets? Our winners will win a WaWa treat! 

ELA (Getz) – We will continue our Civil Rights / Human Rights poetry unit. Students will continue to work on writing their own Civil Rights / Human Rights poem, and create an image to compliment the poem.  Downey(ELA) – Students are reading 12 Angry Men.  Students will be evaluating characterization and plot development. We will be discussing our judicial system as well.  Geography: We will continue to learn about different European countries and the people who live there.  Math:  Reminder:  All students should have their calculators with them in class every day.  Periods 3,6 and 9 are starting to simplify algebraic expressions.  Periods 2 and 8 are working on solving equations with an emphasis on showing the steps, which are more important than the answers right now.  Science: We will wrap up discussing photosynthesis, and then start an online simulation testing how different factors affect the rate of photosynthesis in plants.

ELA:  We finished Monster—yay! Make sure that your digital folders are updated and complete for this week. In class, we will spend time reviewing the book and on Thursday/Friday, it’s TEST DAY!  Use the week to make sure you are familiar and comfortable with the book, so you can rock it on the test. HISTORY:  Constitution Unit: Students will be digging into the Articles, Sections and Clauses of the United States Constitution. This week there will be a Take Home Test on the Constitution.  SCIENCE: Round One of the EGG DROP LAUNCH is scheduled for 3/25 and 3/26. Winners will advance to the finals! Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood)  

In History, students will finish learning about Lewis and Clark’s expedition and understand the impact on the expansion of the United States.  The War of 1812 will be examined and it’s connection to the Star Spangled Banner.  In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we will apply our poetic terms “Theories in Time and Space” by Natasha Tretheway.  In Wallach’s ELA class, we are continuing to read The Outsiders. We are working on giving detailed responses with text-based evidence along with higher-level thinking skills. Students are currently reading chapters 9-10 and working on a presentation based on discussion points about the novel.  Science: The students will be participating in the Egg Drop Lab. This will be an “All in Class” assignment. The Egg Drop Launch Day is scheduled for March 25/26.    In Grade 8 Math (Periods 4 and 9), students will be introduced to Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit..  In Grade 8 Math (Period 3), students will finish Relations and Functions and be introduced to Scatter Plots..  In Algebra 1, students will be introduced to Scatter Plots and Trend Lines.

Music (Mrs. de Vries Twitter @ldevriesmusic)-Welcome to rotation 5 students! Please remember to bring your encore folder and earbuds to all in-person classes. E-learners need to attend virtual class starting this Monday. Log on to Schoology at the following times: 6th grade-12:00, 7th grade 1:15 and 8th grade 2:30.

Health and Fitness: As we enter spring and warm weather, be prepared to have PE class outside on the turf. Dress appropriately for the weather. Make sure to complete any outstanding assignments before the marking period ends. Speak with your teachers for questions, comments and concerns.

Anime Club (Advisors Ms. Fehr/Mrs. Wallach)  Our next meeting will be April 13-14 during Lion’s Pride in room 104. We are still accepting new members to the club. Congratulations to our drawing contest winners: A-L was Mekhi and M-Z was Gia. 

 

Art Club (Advisor Mrs. Lund) The Art Club students should come to room 011 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings during Lion’s Pride. Bring your drawings with you so we can get back on track after the crazy winter schedule!! If you have conflicting morning activities see me and we can discuss other options.

 

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  The Winter/Spring Art Smart classes from the Banana Factorystarted last week!  The Tuesday creative writing class is held from 3:10 – 4:10 in Mrs. Lare’s class, Room 317. Students should bring a pen and pencil.  The Thursday jewelry/wiring class is held from 3:10 – 4:10 in Mrs. Lund’s ground floor art class.  All materials will be provided. There are still spaces available in each class, but this week is the last week students may sign up.  PLEASE NOTE: WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY HYBRID STUDENTS AND E-CLASS STUDENTS MAY SIGN UP FOR AND JOIN THE CLASSES VIA ZOOM.  Email Mrs. Lare right away if you are interested: alare@basdschools.org  Students who have already signed up should return their permission forms to Mrs. Lare.

Creative Writing with Josh Berk

“The creative writing program is called Write Now! and is offered in conjunction with the Bethlehem Area Public Library. Author/Library Josh Berk makes writing fun. Students will learn about all different types of creative writing – poetry, fiction, memoir, and more – then try their hand at each.  We will work together to publish a literary journal to share creations in a fun and creative way.” 

 

Jewelry and Wirework with Allison Mackenzie

“Twist, tie, wrap, and bend.”  Work with wire, leather, and beads to explore ancient jewelry making techniques with your own modern creativity. No special tools needed – everything easily made with supplied kits. This session will explore Native American wire dream catcher pendants, Nordic leather cord knotting, and Celtic inspired braided wire.”

 

Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Activity pd. will be in the auditorium on Tue/Wed. After school practices are Thursday and Friday until 4.

 

Environmental Club (Advisor Ms. Stewart)Our next meeting will be held on Monday, March 22nd at noon. New members are welcomed to participate. For more information, please search for our club on Schoology. Information and zoom links will be posted there.

 

French Club(Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Mardi Gras is Tuesday, February 16! All French classes will be celebrating throughout the week.  Students are encouraged to wear the Mardi Gras colors – purple, green, and gold – on their day in French. Students will have the option of making an on-line or actual mask in class. If they’d like to make the latter, they may bring their own arts & crafts decorations. Laissez les bons temps rouler! Let the good times roll! 

 

German Club (Advisor Mrs. Sofka) Hallo alle! German club will meet Tuesday & Wednesday in Frau Sofka’s room 313 during Lion’s Pride! This week we will be testing your German knowledge by playing a German Trivia Game and watching a Film in German!

Lion Service Club (Advisor Mrs. McLaughlin)  Thank you to everyone who donated used eyewear for the Lion’s Club who will have the glasses reconditioned and distributed on mission trips.  Our next project will be in February. Once again, we will be collecting for Roadtrip Rescues. Please look for more information to come out. Members–our next meeting will be on 3/8 at 12:00pm.

Congratulations to Stefan who finished 14th in the Chapter Competition and qualified to attend the Chapter Invitational Competition on 2/25.  I’d also like to congratulate Stephanie, who finished 22nd, and Carsten, who finished 25th.  All students who participated should be able to log into the AOPS website to see their answers and the correct ones, as well as the questions.

Stefan took the Chapter Invitational Competition this week, results will be available Thursday evening.

Nitschmann Dramatics (Advisor Mrs. Hriniak)    Rehearsals now go until 5:00.  Check your email for the March schedule.  See the update emails from Mrs. Hriniak for information.  Keep doing some online research about Hairspray background topics so you have a better understanding of our show.  Listen to your music at home and read your script so you know the show forwards, backwards, and inside-out!

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Our two teams have picked their team names! We have Team “The Mysterious Nitschmann Society” and “Team House of the Lions”!  We are excited for the competition on April 15! The students have been working hard all year reading the books on the competition book list and writing summaries. Due to the pandemic, It will be done virtually this year with other middle schools through Zoom in the library. It will begin at 3:30 P.M. Information will be sent home this week with all of the details. We will continue to meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays as teams during Lion’s Pride in the library. Our yearbook photos will be taken on Wednesday, March 24th  and Thursday, March 25th  at 11:00 A,M, in the gym. Our Nitschmann Mask fundraiser will continue during the time we meet.  (Mrs. Werkheiser will also sell them throughout the day in the library if you can’t make it during Lion’s Pride on a Tuesday or Wednesday) They are $10.00 a piece.. Even during the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, the middle school instrumental music program found a way to celebrate music in our schools. Enjoy this performance featuring musicians from all four of our middle schools, coming together for this one of a kind concert.

SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS

COLOR GUARD UPDATES:

 

Our pre-recording for the virtual Winter Performance is this Monday, March 22.  Students should plan to be at school from 8:00am to 3:00pm in the gym.  

 

Because this is a normal Monday home learning day, we will be able to have both A-L and M-Z groups rehearse and perform together at school.  Please make transportation arrangements, as buses will not be running on this day.  Students should enter at the gym doors.  We will have a chance to meet our fellow color guard students from the opposite day, rehearse all of our routines over the course of the morning, have lunch, and then record our performance.  Students can be picked up at 3:00.

 

Due to current safety procedures, we are not able to have a live audience.  Recorded performance footage will be edited by Mr. Braun and BASD Media.  Once the video is ready we will send out the link so you can enjoy the virtual performance from the comfort of your own home.

 

Please bring a bag lunch. The cafeteria will not be serving food on Monday, so please bring your own lunch. We also recommend bringing your ChromeBook so you can access your routines, documents, music, etc.  You can also work on your Monday assignments if there is a break.

 Friday Flags: purple tie-dye shirt, leggings, sneakers, mask, white shirt for America

 *We will have a few extra masks available just in case. Thank you for socially distancing, washing your hands, wearing your mask, cleaning your equipment, and keeping your fellow Color Guard members safe!

We will review these details at our regular early morning rehearsals on Thursday 3/18 and Friday 3/19.  Following the winter performance, we will continue to rehearse on Thursday and Friday mornings as we prepare for the spring season.  Watch for exciting updates and information for the spring concert!

  • Rehearsals are before school at 7:15am on Thursdays/Fridays.
  • We are currently working on routines for the Winter Performance.
  • Our pre-recording date for the virtual Winter Performance has been rescheduled for Monday March 22, 8:00am to 3:00pm in the gym. Because this is a normal Monday home learning day, we will be able to have both A-L and M-Z groups rehearse together at school in the gym before recording our performance. Please make transportation arrangements, as buses will not be running on this day.

More details will be sent out closer to March 22, but at this time please update your calendar to cancel the evening of March 3 and save the date for Monday March 22 during the day.

  • The next NIMAS general membership meeting is on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30PM.
  • If you received an invitation email from Mr. Zettlemoyer from Cut Time, that is because you need to complete the activation of your Cut Time profile.
  • The $25 registration fee has been added to your child’s financial obligation page on Cut Time. There are 3 ways you can make a payment.
  • You can use funds from your fair share account. Please email the treasurer at NIMAStreasurer@gmail.com if you would like to use your fair share to pay the registration fee.
  • You can pay online with a credit or debit card.
  • You can mail a check to: (Make your check payable to NIMAS. Write your child’s full name on the memo line.)

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT:

 

 

The Nitschmann Middle School band and orchestra is collecting NEW items for the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.

 

Our goal is to fill 100 bags to help make a child’s stay in the hospital a brighter experience. Help us make a huge difference and put a smile on a child’s face!
