- Spring Break/Easter Holiday continues on Monday. Classes return as scheduled starting Tuesday, Ap[ril 6. .
- The 3rd Quarter ends Friday, April 9. Students & parents should check Schoology to review any missing or incomplete assignments before this date. Use the break this weekend to make sure everything is complete.
- Summer Programs! Nitschmann will be hosting several summer programs in July and August to help our students after this long school year. In addition to our regular August Ramp-Up Program”, we will be hosting several week-long day camps, connected to our favorite activities, to help students reconnect with school for the 2021-2022 school year. Stay tuned for day camp information & signups.

The ADL’s No Place for Hate Student Essay Contest: ( Dr. Sierra)-
*Students will be writing a response to the ADL/NPFH essay topic during LEAD.
*Students do not have to participate in the contest, but will participate in the LEAD activity.

MathCounts Update: (Lafey)
Congratulations to Stefan Christiansen who qualified to represent Nitschmann at the Chapter Invitational Competition later this month. He ranked 14th out of students from schools throughout the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos. Stephanie Zheng was 22nd and Carsten Rothbauer was 25th. Great Job!

The end of Quarter 3 is very close, so please take this week to finish all current and overdue assignments to get your grades where they deserve to be.

Congratulations to the following students for earning our Mountain Hawk Spotlight Awards this week: Brooke Nienstedt and Abigail Brown. This is an award that Lehigh teachers give to students who soar above the rest! Students earn a certificate and are recognized at our team celebrations. Way to go – we are proud of you for leading the way for our team!
The end of the third marking period is shortly after the Spring break! Check your grade report in Schoology to see if all your grades are in good standing. Look not only for missing assignments, but also assignments for which you did not do well on and you may be able to remediate. This process of checking on your grades should be part of your weekend routine!!!

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) -The Team Kutztown Annual Baby Bottle Fundraising Campaign ends this week. All students should return their baby bottles to their homeroom teacher. The Cay Galgon Life House reuses the bottles with other organizations. We would also like to thank all students and their families in advance for their generosity to this worthy cause. Math (Mrs. Evancho) – Reminder: All students should be bringing calculators to class with them! Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week students will continue to learn about the location, structure, and function of the different parts of a cell. In addition, they will also learn about the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells, as well as, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. We will also begin a lab this week where students will be observing plant and animal cells under the microscope to see their similarities and differences.
English (Mr. Falteich) – This week students will watch part of the Academy Award winning movie, 12 Angry Men. The purpose is to identify with the jurors for their culminating project – Which of the 12 jurors do you have the most in common with and why? Students must include support from the text and film in their written response.
Geography (Mr. Danyi) We will continue to learn about different European countries and the people who live there.

ELA (Getz) – This week, we will begin the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. If you have not turned in your We Beat the Street or Flesh and Blood so Cheap books, please bring them to return to the library. Downey(ELA) – Students are finishing 12 Angry Men. Students will be evaluating characterization and plot development. We will compare the movie to the story in the coming week. Geography: We will continue to learn about different European countries and the people who live there. Math: Reminder: All students should have their calculators with them in class every day. Periods 3,6 and 9 are simplifying algebraic expressions, this week we’ll be using the distributive property. Periods 2 and 8 are working on solving equations with an emphasis on showing the steps. We’re working on multi-step equations with variables on both sides this week. Science: We will be continuing with the online photosynthesis simulation this week. THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT IS DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY 4/9. There will be a test the following week, which we will review for.

ELA: We will begin our study of The Outsiders in literature circle groups: Get ready to analyze teenage life in the 1960s and compare it to your life today. HISTORY: Constitution Unit: Students will be discussing the Rights contained in the Bill of Rights, great dinner conversations about Time, Place and Manner. In History, many great names in American History are connected with an idea or event, Washington and the Revolution, Lincoln and the Civil War, MLK and Civil Rights. Andrew Jackson’s name is very closely tied to democracy, but is it historically fair and accurate to do so? Students will complete a DBQ on the Age of Jackson. In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we are moving onto our new poem “Inside Out and Back Again.” We will be researching multiple topics to provide some context to the character and time period this week. We will also be introducing our new grammar concept: appositives. In Mrs. Wallach’s ELA class, we are finishing The Outsiders. We are working on giving detailed responses with text-based evidence along with higher-level thinking skills. Students will be taking an open-ended final essay test on the novel. Science: The students will be participating in the Egg Drop Lab. This will be an “All in Class” assignment. The Egg Drop Launch Day is scheduled for March 25/26. In Grade 8 Math (Periods 4 and 9), students will review Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit, and be introduced to Two Way Frequency Tables. In Grade 8 Math (Period 3), students will be introduced to Scatter Plots. In Algebra 1, students will review Scatter Plots and Trend Lines, and be introduced to Arithmetic Sequences.

Art Club (Advisor Mrs. Lund) The Art Club students should come to room 011 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings during Lion’s Pride. Bring your drawings with you so we can get back on track after the crazy winter schedule!! If you have conflicting morning activities see me and we can discuss other options.
Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare) Art Smart classes in Creative Writing and Jewelry/Wiring are nearly complete. The Creative Writing class has one more session this Tuesday, March 30. The Jewelry/Wiring class has two more sessions on April 8 and April 15. The kids have been creating some amazing work!
Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Activity pd. will be in front of the auditorium on Tue/Wed. After school practices are Thursday and Friday until 4.

This week we will be searching for an Easter egg hidden for each club member and watching short clips of Easter in Germany.

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) We are excited for the competition on April 15! We have 2 more weeks to prepare for it! The students have been working hard all year reading the books on the competition book list and writing summaries. Due to the pandemic, It will be done virtually this year with other middle schools through Zoom in the library. It will begin at 3:30 P.M. Information was sent home last week with all of the details. Please make sure the permission forms are returned asap. We will continue to meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays as teams during Lion’s Pride in the library. Our Nitschmann Mask fundraiser will continue during the time we meet. (Mrs. Werkheiser will also sell them throughout the day in the library if you can’t make it during Lion’s Pride on a Tuesday or Wednesday) They are $10.00 a piece. May 24th: Selected 8th graders to rehearse and record virtual All City choral concert at North East Middle School. Students must learn the music posted on Schoology.
May 25: Spring concert and end of the year celebration at Nitschmann. We will be viewing the video produced on May 17th and handing out awards. Limited audience for safe viewing.

Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student interested in cheerleading for next school year for NMS or LHS, should attend Lion’s Pride Tuesday and Wednesday after we return from break. We will be holding skills and drills to better prepare everyone for tryouts at NMS and LHS. There are no specific details about tryouts or dates for either school yet, but that information will be coming soon!
