Carril Memorial Scholarship Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Peter J Carril Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a college-bound <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">senior male or female basketball player at Liberty High School, whose effort, achievement, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and character most exemplify those qualities which were foundational as well as sustaining throughout Pete Carril\u2019s life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Young Pete grew up on East Third St. on Bethlehem\u2019s South Side in a single-parent household. His father worked long hours at the steel mill. His older sister Anita, kept an eye on him, while the Bethlehem Boys Club and the Calvo family provided him with the warmth and guidance of a second family. He had a talent for the game of basketball and it would become his one, true passion, eventually earning him a place in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pete went on to attend Liberty High School and do well as a basketball player, developing good skills and work ethic under the tutelage of Coach Joseph Preletz. He graduated from Liberty in 1948, and it was Joe Preletz who sent his star player off to nearby Lafayette College with the inspirational poem that Carril would hold onto throughout his entire life. &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Man Who Thinks He Can&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a poem about tenacity, true grit, and overcoming obstacles against all odds. But most of all, it is a poem about believing in oneself, about never giving up, about making something come true because the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">belief was there that one could.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Peter J Carril Memorial Scholarship will go to the player who demonstrates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4860 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/With-Rocco-Calvo-r.-1948-180x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/With-Rocco-Calvo-r.-1948-180x300.png 180w, https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/With-Rocco-Calvo-r.-1948.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Integrity, talent, and sportsmanship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in basketball<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Integrity and scholastic achievement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in academics\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Good citizenship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the school community as well as in the Bethlehem community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A willingness to put the success of the team first\u2026<\/span><b>unselfishness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leadership qualities thatinvolve kindness, sensitivity, and inclusiveness\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b>strong<\/b> <b>work ethic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the classroom and on the court<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ability to <\/span><b>make good decisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> both on and off the court<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Courage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with confronting the challenges of the game as well as those in everyday life along with the <\/span><b>tenacity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to never give up\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A strong system of <\/span><b>core values <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the belief that no matter what, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he is the man who thinks he can.<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4864\" src=\"http:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/At-a-tournament-1991.-1-300x250.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/At-a-tournament-1991.-1-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/At-a-tournament-1991.-1-1024x853.png 1024w, https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/At-a-tournament-1991.-1-768x640.png 768w, https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thefoundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/At-a-tournament-1991.-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The scholarship amount of $2,500 is awarded annually at the Athletic Awards Banquet at the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">end\u00a0<\/span><span>of the year. It <\/span><span>will be presented to the recipient who is enrolled in an accredited college, with the intent of using the award toward the payment of tuition bills and\/or academic books\/supplies. Liberty will send the financial award directly to the college where the recipient has decided to attend. A framed copy of the poem will be given to the recipient, as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you Tim vanBlommesteyn (Princeton, \u201875) for being the initial voice of this scholarship.\u00a0 It is one of (if not THE) best ways of honoring that young Liberty High School player\u2013 #17 \u2013who had the talent, drive, and passion to make a dream happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Written by Lisa D.
