On November 25 we will be hosting an assembly with Mikayla's Voice at 9:30am for grades K-2 and 10:15am for grades 3-5. These dates and times can be found on the WP calendar. Here is a description of the event from Mikayla's Voice
"During the school-wide inclusion assemblies, we start with Mikayla's Voice history, then we share the book Our Friend Mikayla, communication device and feeding tube mini video, if available a co-presenter (student or young adult with a disability) also shares their personal story. We encourage all questions, providing honest answers and further discussion about having a friend with a disability. Each presentation concludes with an invitation for all students to serve as Mikayla’s “Voice.” "
On February 7, a selected group of 24 students will participate in a hands-on art project with guests from McKayla's Voice. Here is a description of that project:
"Kaya's Kaleidoscope 24 students (12 with and 12 without disabilities) - You choose the 24 students.
Decoupage - glue and tissue paper.
Kaya’s Kaleidoscope is created when students complete their own individual canvases that work together in an interactive, almost puzzle- like design. Symbolic of school communities, every canvas is as essential to the mural as each student to their school. And, in keeping with Mikayla’s Voice message, mission, and style, each canvas features wheelchair tracks, tissue paper decoupage, and a yellow spot. The canvases can be arranged and rotated any way, creating an endless number of options… each as unique and beautiful as the next. The interactive exhibits allow thousands of students to engage with the art and consider its many lessons: we are all individuals, each important to our school and community, connected in many ways, and definitely better together."
There will be an unveiling of the art project in May for the whole school.
