Dear Parents & Guardians,

This morning, I spoke with all students regarding the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Events like this can be unnerving to students, teachers, staff, parents & guardians, and me. With the recent wave of shootings, the changing national conversation around gun violence in schools, and my own constant concern for your child’s safety, I felt it was necessary to speak to the whole school.

During my presentation, I reinforced with all students that we all have a collective role to play in our school safety plan, whether it is Officer Conley’s role to serve a police officer or their role to report anything strange to an adult immediately.

In addition, your child’s homeroom teacher reviewed our school fire, lockdown, and emergency procedures today. We will be holding a systematic review & tests of all school procedures within the next week to make sure that all students & staff continue to be prepared for any emergency.

The Nitschmann Parent Group and I will be holding a Coffee Talk meeting this Thursday, February 22 at 7pm in the Library about this very important issue and it’s impact on our school community. It is our hope to give you an opportunity to talk together and ask questions with us.

Please contact me by phone or email with any questions, concerns, or suggestions to help make sure that our school community is proactively prepared.

Thank you.

Mr. Mayes
