Home / News / NMS_March 14 Walkout Information Update

Dear Parents & Guardians,

As many of you may have seen in the news, students across the United States are planning & organizing a student walk-out on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 to bring awareness to school safety.

When you send us your child each day, you expect us to keep them safe. At Nitschmann Middle School, I have serious safety concerns having students outside the school building during the school day, especially when it has been publicized that they will be outside in the media. In addition, I am trying to balance the needs of students to express their voice, my concerns for their safety, and for students who do not wish to attend to continue to have their normal educational program.

I have announced to students yesterday that I have these concerns and have organized a plan to listen to students desires to express their opinions and feelings about school safety. They have raised some great actionable steps to share their voices and bring awareness to this issue.

It is my hope to gather all of this information this week and make a proactive, positive plan with our student leaders for our school community to share with you and your children by email prior to March 14.

Thank you.

Mr. Mayes, Principal
