School counselors assist in fostering academic growth and development by providing a positive connection to school services.
Students may be referred to school counselors for assistance with: academic achievement, career awareness and exploration, personal and social development, grief/loss, anger and stress management, attendance, crisis intervention, peer relations, and other developmental guidance issues.
Some school counseling interventions include:
- regular student contacts with self-report of progress
- individual and group counseling
- teacher/team consultations
- teacher/student/counselor meetings
- weekly or bi-weekly student contacts
- parental consultations
- behavior contract with teachers/students
- parent/teacher conferences
- guidance team discussion for input/suggestions
- referral to school-based services (Student Assistance Program (SAP) counselor, SAP groups)
- referral to outside agencies
- consultation with outside service providers
- classroom observations
- child study discussions
- formal guidance team interventions
- multiple counselor involvement with students
- collaboration with parents, agencies, and IEP team
