Is your child sick?  You can submit your child’s sick note by email to ni-attendance@basdschools.org, as long as the email on your child’s account matches the email address. Please note: If you are submitting a written or doctor’s note do not submit an email.  It should be one or the other. Please email Mrs. Falcone at mfalcone@basdschools.org with any questions or concerns. Please note that this is ONLY for sick notes, not for early release or any other questions!

Nitschmann Blood Drive(Bouhana & McLaughlin) We will be hosting our first annual blood drive on January 24 between 12:30 and 5:30pm. We will be honoring Lara Ellis and Dawn Mendez.  The link below will take you to the search page. Interested donors can search for the event by date and it will come up. You will be able to see the available times and sign up to donate. Blood Drive Search and search for the drive at Nitschmann on the 1/26.  

8th Grade Chromebook Reminder (Mayes) Dear 8th Grade Students, Parents, & Guardians, Just a reminder that all 8th-grade students should be taking their Chromebooks home nightly to charge them and complete their homework. Your Chromebook should never be left in your locker overnight. Your teachers and I have noticed an increase in students requesting to charge laptops during the day. Students who do not come prepared for class with a charged laptop may have consequences assigned by the teacher. If you are having an issue with your Chromebook not holding a charge, please see Mrs. Ellis immediately for repair. We want you to have everything you need each day! Thank you.

8th Grade Chromebook WiFi Needs (Mayes) If you are an 8th grade student and do not have reliable wi-fi at home, please see Mrs. Ellis. 

Holiday Gift Giving Tree- The Leadership Council has adopted the “Holiday Giving Tree” as its community service project.  The “Holiday Giving Tree” is decorated with ornaments (tags) that identify the age, gender, and a holiday wish for a less fortunate child.  This project is sponsored by Northampton County and benefits children, youth, and families in our community.  If you choose to participate, return the attached permission slip to Mrs. Ellis or Mr. Kocon in the library and select an ornament (tag) from the Giving Tree located in the NMS library.  The ornaments will be available beginning November 18th. 

 

Roadtrip Rescues-The Lions Service Club is collecting items to donate to this great cause. We are collecting dog treats, blankets, laundry detergent, leashes, dog food, dog toys, paper towels, brushes, sponges or mops, etc. If you would like to donate an item, please bring it to room 209.

Schoology Directions for Parents

Picking Up Your Child For An Appointment (Falcone): Please make sure to send a parent signed excuse with your child the morning of your child’s appointment.  Your child will bring the excuse to Student Services during Homeroom Period in order to receive a pass to leave class.  This method inturn minimizes the interruption of educational instruction to the entire classroom.  

 

Dropping Off Forgotten Items (Falcone):  We strive to encourage each student to be responsible and organized in preparation for their future high school years.  Recently there has been an increased volume of items that students have forgotten at home and parents have brought into the school for them. This has caused a decrease in class instruction time caused by frequent interruptions.  We understand some items are necessary to conduct a normal school day such as: BASD Chromebooks, eyeglasses and lunch. Items such as clothing, sports equipment and phones do not warrant interruption to the entire class. To prevent interruptions to all our students, we ask that should you decide to drop off an item, you label that item with your child’s name and grade and place the item in the designated area located within the Student Service Office.  Send your child an email at their BASD email account to remind them, please do not text or call your child during the school day, which can lead to their cell phone confiscation.

Academic Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) It was great to see so many of you at Student Led Conferences last week.  We hope you were impressed with your child’s presentation. Be sure to check in with them throughout the quarter to see how they are doing on reaching their goals.  We would like to wish you a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving break. It is our hope that you spend this time with family and friends!

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  First of all, it was a pleasure seeing you at our student led conferences this past week. Even if you were not able to attend it is expected that your child held a home conference with you and went over the information in his/her Lead binder. In addition there was a conference survey that you and your child need to complete. It can be found in the students Citizenship class on Schoology. We would also like to thank all the people who were able to donate to our annual food drive and/or the hat mitten and sock drive that we held. Believe it or not the middle of the 2nd marking period is right around the corner.  Please continue to look at grades on Schoology and see that all missing assignments are completed.

Our first walking trip to Moravian College  has been scheduled for November 26th. We will be leaving Nitschmann about 9:30AM  and returning around 1PM. Students will be taking a tour of the campus. We will be eating at the college. Students may bring $5 or they may pack lunch. We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with family and friends.

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Hess) – Team – It was nice to see so many of our Team Kutztown parents at our student-led conferences this past Monday and Tuesday.  Science (Mr. Pearson) – During this upcoming shortened week, students will continue to learn about the scientific method.  Specifically, how to write a formal hypothesis.

 

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Miller) On Tuesday, we will be watching Rudy, a true story showing  the determination to accomplish a goal/dream. Through Rudy’s relationships, he was able to accomplish this goal. Our second Study Sync unit focuses on relationships. We will discuss how Rudy’s relationships helped him to succeed. Students that are not in good academic standing will be using this time to catch up in a class  or for remediation. English (Getz) Students are finalizing 3 assignments (all due at the end of class Monday) – 1) Works Cited 2) Structural Argumentative Outline  3) Create Your Own Blast Honors English – Students are finalizing their Blast, which is based on their argumentative speech. The project is due Monday by 10pm.  Social Studies: The students are working on the topic of immigration and Ellis Island. Science: All student lab work, on plant and animal cells, is due Tuesday morning, November 26.  Math: Congratulations to those students who submitted entries in the Hardest Math Problem Contest!  Current grades reflect the bonus points. Students who were successful will receive the second question once I get it in January.  Students in Periods 2,3,and 9 have a quiz Monday on the first three sections of the unit unit, they will need to be able to use the percent proportion and equation.  Periods 6 and 8 are beginning their new unit, which will be about simplifying algebraic expressions. A Look Ahead: Every Friday in December is “Ugly Sweater Friday”. The uglier, the better. Just wait until you see the Team Penn State teachers! Wear something ugly for a chance to win a prize. Each teacher will choose his/her favorite ugly sweater, shirt, etc. 

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @@nmsteamesu Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8 This week students will be making hand turkeys that will have Thanksgiving myths on the back. Over the vacation students should be completing their Oral History interviews. The assignment is due on December 16th at the start of History class. The assignment and rubric are available on schoology.  English classes will continue studying poetry, speeches, and other passages focusing on the use of figurative language.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood) What a FUN-FILLED Team Celebration we had!  Challenge, collaboration, risk-taking, everyone contributes, and laughter, are at the core of every team NCC celebration.  We LOVE what we do! Thank you to all who donated a sleeping bag at the last minute:) History classes will be previewing how our Founding Fathers were truly “revolutionary” for their time period!  What does being “revolutionary” mean in today’s society? In Science class, we will be Counting Atoms and Elements. Quiz on Tues. In Math 8 classes, notes on Relations and Function and practice using worksheets, IXL, Math XL and or Khan Academy.  In Algebra class, notes on Linear Transformations and practice using book, worksheets, IXL, Math XL and or Khan Academy. In Advance Math class, notes Relations and Function and practice using worksheets, IXL, Math XL and or Khan Academy. In English class (Hinkel and Wallach) we are working on unit 2 of StudySync. We finished a station rotation of skills in conjunction with the poem “The Road Less Traveled.” Please be sure to check StudySync daily for any missed or incomplete assignments. We are also starting to infuse a novel study with our curriculum. Block classes are starting to read The Contender by Robert Lipsyte and the other class is reading You Don’t Know Me by David Klass. We are excited to incorporate the novels into our daily lessons. Please be sure students have their own set of earbuds so they can listen to the text online and watch the content-related videos!  Please encourage your child to check Schoology for grades, assignments and future events. It is their responsibility to communicate with teachers for clarification and if an absence occurs.

AM Basketball (TBA) Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:15am to 7:45am. All students are required to attend breakfast after practice. Doors only open at 7:15am, so do not come late!

 

Anime Club (Advisors Ms. Fehr/Mrs. WallachOur next meeting is December 16 in room 104. Please bring your drawings and books to the meeting. We will announce the winner of the drawing contest.

 

Art Club (Advisors Mrs. Kozero/Mrs. Lund) Art Club began on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 3:15 to 4:15pm. If you have returned the completed and signed Art Club form, come to the art room 011 afterschool on Mondays. This Monday November 18 , Art Club will NOT meet due to the half day schedule. The next Art Club will meet on November 25.

  

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes will not meet this week on Tuesday due to the early dismissal.  Classes will meet on Thursday of this week, as scheduled. Students who signed up for classes are expected to attend Art Smart if they are in school. Parents should pick up their children at 6 p.m. sharp at Nitschmann’s main entrance. Thank you.

 

Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) No practice this week- Gr. 8 who plan to buy sweatshirts/jacket must send order to Dr. Sierra via email $30 due by Dec. 6.  Show at East Hills will be Dec. 12- more information will be shared soon.

 

German Club (Advisor Mrs. Sofka) German club meets every day 1 during 1st period in Mrs. Sofka’s room 313. Our next meeting is Friday, 12/6.  We will be learning about and preparing for Skt. Nikolaus Tag. German club is currently full due to space and is limited to Mrs. Sofka and Ms. Schwartz’s students only. Please see Mrs. Sofka if you are still interested in joining.  

 

Heart & Sole Club (Advisor TBA) None at this time.

 

Fitness Club ( Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Fitness club this week will be on Wednesday and Thursday until 4pm

 

FCS/DIY Club (Advisor Mrs. Hoffman) None at this time.

 

French Club (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  French Club tee shirts are on sale for $9.00 each. Please initial your son or daughter’s order form when sending in your payment. We need an order of at least 24, so we really need every student to buy a shirt!  Merci! – French Club learned about La Toussaint – All Saints Day – which is a holiday in France on November 1.. Students learned that all over France graves are visited and adorned with beautiful flowers and candles. Students also learned about Père Lachaise cemetery, the Panthéon, and the Catacombs, all in the city of Paris.

 

Intramurals (Advisor Mr. Ortwein)  Current intramural activities are boys’ volleyball, lacrosse for boys and girls, and wrestling for boys and girls.  If you are interested in these activities meet with the supervisors to see if there is still room for you to join. Leadership Council (Advisor Mrs. Ellis) Leadership Council is collecting new hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and socks to donate to New Bethany Ministries. Please send in your donations with your child.  There is a box in the library for the items. The Leadership Council has adopted the “Holiday Giving Tree” as its community service project. The “Holiday Giving Tree” is decorated with ornaments (tags) that identify the age, gender, and a holiday wish for a less fortunate child.  This project is sponsored by Northampton County and benefits children, youth, and families in our community.  If you choose to participate, return this permission slip to Mrs. Ellis or Mr. Kocon in the library and select an ornament (tag) from the Giving Tree located in the NMS library.  The ornaments will be available beginning November 18th. 

 

Lion Service Club (Advisor Mrs. McLaughlin) We will meet this Wednesday 11/20. We will finalize the Roadtrip Rescues Drive. We will also be discussing the Blood Drive we will host on 1/24. Check out our Schoology group I created….there is a lot of information and pictures from Leadership Day.

 

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet during activity Period on Day 1. Please stay on top of your articles and stories, and submit them on our shared drive to the FINISHED folder, so that our editor can look them over. Enjoy your Thanksgiving break!

 

Mathcounts (Advisor Ms. Novatnak) We have a great group of kids, but new students are still welcome to join.  Just come to room 213 after school on Thursday! In the fall, MathCounts is an enrichment activity.  Students will be working together and helping each other. We meet every Thursday from 3:05 – 4:00, and everyone is welcome.  We will hold our school level competition on Monday, January 13th to determine which students will be representing Nitschmann at the Lehigh Valley Chapter Competition on Saturday, February 8th at Trexler Middle School in Allentown.  Students who don’t qualify can still come to practices to get stronger for next year.  Congratulations to our newly elected officers,  President Neil R, Treasurer Owen L, and Secretary Hadi A.  Students have been emailed to results of the practice competition.  These results are unofficial and just a chance for students to experience testing conditions and a time limit before taking the real school level competition in January.

 

National Junior Honor Society  (Advisors Mrs. Wallach/Mrs. Druckenmiller) (Twitter-@Njhs_Nitschmann; Instagram- @Njhs_Nistchmann ) Thank you to all who contributed to our winter drive by donating hats, gloves, and socks. We will be donating to New Bethany Ministries. Our next meeting is December 4 both before and after school. Continue to listen for updates via announcements and Schoology.

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) (Advisor Mr. Amen)  PJAS students are to come after school whenever they need help on their projects.  Students are encouraged to use pjas.net. Please review your email and bring in all documentation so experimentation can begin.

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Thank you so much for all of the wonderful donations for our bake sale!  It was a big success! Wishing all of our students and families a Happy Thanksgiving! Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 4 until 4 :00 P.M. The competition is on Thursday,  April 16th, 2020. We will be meeting every Wednesday after school until 4 P.M. through the end of February to read, discuss, and write summaries about the books to help us prepare for the competition.  We will be meeting until 5 P.M. in March and April up until the competition. A schedule will be sent home for the last few weeks.

Save the Sea Turtles Club (Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Thanks to a group of very ambitious 7th graders we are continuing our Save the Sea Turtles Club this year!  We will meet Fridays after school until 4pm in room 307. Guess what? Nitschmann Middle School adopted a sea turtle this summer.  His name is Gerry and he is a resident sea turtle that lives in South Padre Island, Texas. We will have the opportunity to do a virtual field trip and check in on Gerry and the other resident sea turtles.  This club is open to grades 6, 7, & 8. We look forward to a great year full of lots of ideas and putting things in action to do our part in saving sea turtles!!

 

Ski & Snowboard Club (Advisors Mr. Downey)  Students were given a form to ask your preference pertaining to bussing.  Please fill out the form and return to Mr. Downey ASAP. If you did not see this form, have your child get one from Mr. Downey.

Lions/Lady Lions Athletics Updates (Twitter @NMS_Athletics)

A reminder for all students who participate in athletics that keeping your grades up is a requirement of participating at Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty High School. Students should be in good academic standing at the end of the 1st Quarter prior to try-outs in November. Grades are check bi-weekly by Student Services. 

 

Physical Packet to Download (done once a school year AFTER June 1, 2019)

 

Recertification forms must be completed by returning athletes at the start of every season.  Recertification Forms are available from Mr. Ortwein during homeroom in room 310 (complete this if a PIAA Physical was already completed for this year).  Students/families can also email at jortwein@basdschools.org to have a recert page emailed to them.

 

After-School Bus Transportation for Student-Athletes (5:15pm Pickup @ NMS)

Bus Run Stops for NMS Students West:  (Stops are as assigned based off the ridership) – Students MUST already receive BASD Bus Transportation home from school.
