Sunday, February 21, 2021, to Sunday, February 28, 2021

  • Change from Zoom to Go Guardian Conferencing for students: Over the next week, Nitschmann teachers will be transitioning all students from using Zoom to our more secure system called Go Guardian Conferencing. This system provides greater security & monitoring systems for teachers. This will require students to use their BASD Chromebook and teachers will invite them to join the online session. Students will no longer be able to connect through any other device other than their BASD laptop. Directions for students are posted at this link. Teachers will update students directly when their class will be transitioning. Zoom will continue to be used for parent online meetings. You can find our BASD Go Guardian policies at this link.

  • Spring Sports Physicals will be held on Monday, February 22nd from 5-8pm in the Auxiliary Gym at Liberty High School.  All BASD Middle School Student Athletes that have not obtained a sports physical for the 2020-2021 school year are encouraged to attend this free physical option provided by SLUHN. Students who have tested positive in the past for COVID may not attend these physicals & need to go to their primary care physician for physicals.

  • 2020-2021 Yearbooks: NMS Yearbooks are now on sale at www.yearbookordercenter.com. Enter NMS Code: 5049 when ordering. Yearbooks must be ordered ahead of time – there are usually very few extras at the end of the year! The cut-off date for ordering is March 1st!

  • 2021 PSSA & Keystones Exams: Dr. Mayes is waiting for final information from the State of Pennsylvania on testing dates for the 2021 PSSA & Keystone Exams. When this information is distributed to school districts, he will include it in the next Sunday Email with schedules and directions. We are planning to administer these exams in April & May.

  • 8th Grade End of Year Events: We are planning our traditional end-of-the-year events for our 8th grade students, but events are very tentative at this time as we work out details to fit within the requirements from the State of Pennsylvania. Dates & information will be distributed as soon as we have confirmation in our Sunday Email.

  • Welcome to Mrs. Bernardo: Please welcome Mrs. Bernardo to Nitschmann, who will be serving as a long-term substitute for Mrs. Sierra while she is out for the 2nd Semester!

Core & Encore Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman)   Report cards went out last week, and we need to have the paper copies of the report cards signed and returned.  Congratulations to all of our Honor Roll students!   There are so many things going on in the world right now, and we are so proud of the students who have found a way to be at their best.   Any issues that we can help the kids with, we are ready to give our support.  If you need us, reach out to us so we can set up something to help students find more successes with their learning.  Lastly, if there are any supplies that may have dwindled throughout the first semester, replenish them so the kids are ready to attack the second semester with the same excitement and energy they had at the start of the year

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh/ Facebook @NitschmannTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver

Snow continues to plague the third marking period. We would like to thank everyone for showing up on time for their virtual sessions this past Thursday and Friday. For the most part, we thought they went fairly well. A couple of important reminders on this topic: 1) E-classroom students are expected to attend; 2) you should be accessing the session from your school computer and your proper name should be displayed during the session; and 3) if asked to show your face or speak, you should be prepared to do so.

With that being said, it appears that the inconsistent schedule due to the weather, has caused an increase in missing work. Detentions area being assigned to those students who are continuously behind with their assignments. Please go into schoology a minimum of once a week and look for missing assignments and/or assignments that need to be re-done. Keep in mind that you have to actually open the grade report to see these. Once an assignment is given a grade of any kind (zeros included) or is marked as missing/incomplete it will no longer show up on the right hand side as work to be done. That right hand column on the schoology page can be very misleading

This is also true on a daily basis. Students should be opening their course each day and looking at the agenda to see what they have to do.  Extra information and directions are in there that do not appear on the right hand side. In addition future assignments that students are not ready for yet, but are posted for the marking period are often on the right hand side. These are not intended to be completed until gone over by the teacher. Unfortunately, students are seeing these, doing them and failing as a result.  Use the information within the course folders to see what must be completed each day.

Again as we have mentioned before, we are here both before (7:30 am) and after (til 3:30) school for students who need a place to come in and work. As of now no one has taken advantage of coming in before school.  If you have trouble finding a quiet place to work at home or your internet is not all that stable, before school is an excellent solution to the problem.

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis)

We are available before and after school. Talk to your teacher if you would like to work on any assignments during those times. Please continue monitoring your grades by checking Schoology. Make sure you are looking at M3.

Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Falteich) – The third marking period has begun. Please keep up with assignments on Schoology. We can’t stress how important it is not to fall behind and let assignments pile up. As always, check in with your teachers in person or via email if you have any questions. Math (Mrs. Evancho) – Reminder: All students should be bringing calculators to class with them! Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week we will continue to learn about the chemical compounds that are found in cells.  English (Mr. Falteich) – We will review last week’s quiz on irregular verbs.  Students will then begin a public speaking unit. The students will research, plan, write, practice, and deliver a persuasive speech on a current debatable topic. This will be their major third quarter project.  Geography (Mr. Danyi) -Students will learn about the physical and human features of Mexico.

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Getz)

ELA (Getz) – Students will continue their novel and WeVideo Projects. We will also complete an activity and discuss social issues within our novel.  Downey(ELA) – We are reading We Beat the Street. Students are studying cause and effect. WeVideo projects should be coming together. There will be a quiz at the end of the week.    Geography: Students will learn about the physical and human features of Mexico.  Math:  Reminder:  All students should have their calculators with them in class every day.  Periods 3,6 and 9 are working with applications of the percent equation, markups and markdowns.  Periods 2 and 8 are working with algebraic expressions.  Science: Students will start to learn about cell transport and how things move in and out of the cell.

Team DeSales (8th) (Team Leader Mrs. Pogue):   Instagram @NMSTeamDSU8  Please be sure to check Schoology on Monday afternoon for any new assignments or course updates.TEAM CELEBRATION 2/25 and 2/26! WEAR RED AND BLUE! We are looking forward to spending time together as a team in some friendly competitions!

In ELA: For your reading of Monster, make sure have read up to page 116 and have updated your digital folders with characters and your journal entries. We’ll be exploring some non-fiction articles about the justice system as well.  HISTORY:  We will be learning about the American Revolution: major events and important people. SCIENCE: Get ready for your science on Balanced and Unbalanced Forces on Thursday and Friday! We’ll be reviewing in class, but you also have notes to review. Start the marking period off strong! MATH: Math8 students are supposed to be done with Lesson 2-5 and starting Lesson 2-6 when the folder is posted. Please check updated To Do Lists and ask for help if you can’t keep up with the deadlines.  Algebra 1 students should be doing the same to transition from Lesson 4-4 to 4-5. The Algebra 1 exam has been postponed until the week of March 1.

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. Hood)

In History, students will focus on their 1st Amendment rights using a lesson from the National Constitution Center as well as take a look at the impact of George Washington’s presidency on shaping the new republic.  In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we will be starting the  introduction to our poetry unit by focusing on applying  key poetic terms to poems.   In Wallach’s ELA class, we are continuing to read The Outsiders. We are working on giving detailed responses with text-based evidence along with higher-level thinking skills. Students are currently reading chapter 7 and working on a character analysis assignment. Science: We will be continuing the exploration of Newton’s Laws. Labs will be done throughout the weeks followed by an all inclusive Test on all of Newton’s laws.    In Grade 8 Math (Periods 4 and 9), students will take their Slope Quiz (Tuesday/Wednesday) and continue to learn/work with Slope Intercept Form (Write an Equation and Graphing).  In Grade 8 Math (Period 3), students will take their Proportional Relationship Quiz (Tuesday/Wednesday), continue to work on Slope and be introduced to Slope Intercept Form.  In Algebra 1, students will take their Solving Systems of Equation (focus on Graphing and Substitution) Quiz (Tuesday/Wednesday), continue to work on Solving Systems by Elimination and be introduced to Systems of Equations Word Problems..
