Parent & Student Weekly Email
Nitschmann Middle School Weekly Update, Home of the Nitschmann Nation!
Sunday, April 25, 2021, to Sunday, May 2, 2021
- Please fill out the LEAD end-of-year Parent Survey by clicking on the link below https://www.leaderinme.com/s/nitschmann-middle-pa/parent to help us reflect on our school-wide progress this week!
- Bring Chromebook Chargers Daily! All students should be bringing their Chromebook chargers WITH THEM to school on their hybrid days. We expect students to charge their laptops at night, but we know sometimes this gets missed. We do not have extra chargers, so students are able to plug in if they need to. They need these daily!
- July Summer Programs! Nitschmann will be hosting several summer programs in July and August to help our students after this long school year. In addition to our regular August Ramp-Up Program”, we will be hosting several week-long day camps between July 12 and 30, connected to our favorite activities, to help students reconnect with school for the 2021-2022 school year. Sign-ups will begin in May.
- Algebra Readiness Testing for 7th Grade Students 5/4 & 5/5 Over the next two weeks, Mr. Horlick & his team will begin to prepare scheduling information for next school year. One important part is assessing 7th graders for their algebra readiness to access the Algebra 1 course in 8th grade. This assessment will occur in school on Tuesday, May 4 for all A-L students and Wednesday, May 5 for all M-Z students. e-Classroom students should plan on attending from 8:15am-9:30am to take this assessment.
- World Language Selection for 7th Grade All 6th graders will be completing an online survey to identify their preference for their world language by ranking their request 1st, 2nd, & 3rd for Spanish, French, and German. We will work to give students one of their first two choices in the world language classes for 7th grade. 6th grade parents should take a moment this week to talk with their child about their interests and rank them in order. All current 7th grade students will continue on their current world language path for 8th grade.

Core & Encore Team Updates
Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) The planting process moved inside due to “non-planting” weather, but we will continue to talk about human impacts on the environment, and hopefully get outside to do so! Despite having over a month of school left, it feels like the time is dwindling quickly. Continue to stay on top of Schoology and projects, and get work completed before due dates pass.
Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh/ Facebook @NitschmannTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)
Congratulations to Lilly Medaska, Ben Miller, and Edgar Berrios for earning our Mountain Hawk Spotlight Award this week. This is an award that Lehigh teachers give to students who soar above the rest! Students earn a certificate and are recognized at our team celebrations. Way to go – we are proud of you for leading the way for our team!
This past week, we celebrated Earth Day by doing some fun Earth Day activities that involved comparing and contrasting the book and the movie The Lorax (it is amazing to think that the book was actually written 50 years ago), and making our Earth a little greener by doing some planting in Science class.
We are well into the 4th marking period!!!! We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Walk, do not run to the finish line. Take your time, pay attention to the task at hand. There is still learning and work to be done. Follow the daily routine. Log into Schoology, look for and complete the daily assignments posted by your teachers for each of your classes. This is the easiest way to keep up to date and to be sure your grades stay in good standing. Check your grade report frequently to look for missing assignments and/or grades for which you can remediate. Finish Strong. We Got This!!!
Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian/Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian Team Leader Mrs. Roufakis)
The fourth quarter started on Monday. Some students are already missing work. Please review grades on Schoology.

Periods 2 and 8 will be solving two-step and multi-step inequalities, getting ready for a unit test during the first week of May. Science: We will continue learning about adaptations this week. Students will go through an activity where they have to work with a partner to see how important the human thumb is in our daily lives.

History classes will be focusing on Western Expansion, students will be analyzing different perspectives of expansion. Students will be expected to discuss the viewpoints of enslaved people, native Americans, and western settlers after a Tech book investigation. We will continue our character bio assignment by creating our “life size” characters this week, as well as analyzing the key themes that are emerging.
