Dear Parents/Guardians of 2021-2022 6th Graders,

I know that you have a busy week ahead with your 5th grader and preparing for the end of the school year. While our transition activities have been less than I would have liked this spring due to COVID, I can assure you we are certainly going to make up for it once the restrictions come down this summer. Nitschmann is turning 100 years old next year and we have an amazing year planned for our centennial. Make sure your child connects with school & gets involved before the year begins.

I wanted to highlight a few items to get on your radar for the upcoming summer activities:

1. I strongly encourage you to have your child participate in one of our #FREEintheBASD activities this July. The activities are held daily Monday-Friday 9am-12pm. You can see the list of activities below. Please click the link and have your child join us for one activity each week. This is a great way to connect with Nitschmann and get started making new friends. These are also posted on our NMS Website at this link.

2. I strongly encourage your child to participate in our 2021 Instrumental music program. Our 100th Anniversary Band program is going to have some incredible special events and our return to marching season will culminate in the 2021 Halloween Parade, featuring the 100th Anniversary Nitschmann Middle School Band & Color Guard! As the father of two children who participated, you want your child in this program, even if playing an instrument is brand-new. Meet Mr. Zettlemoyer this Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30pm.  (Zoom link).

3. While 6th graders are not eligible in Pennsylvania to play interscholastic sports until 7th grade, there will be plenty of intramural this school year to participate and try out new activities. Watch our weekly emails.

4. There will be a significant amount of opportunities for your student participate in orientation to middle school, for you to see our school long before school opens, and meet our team in August. We are purposefully waiting until all restrictions are lifted so we can welcome everyone into the building as normal.

5. Your child should keep their Chromebook computer with them at home this summer and make sure to bring it on the first day of school.

6. You can access the 2021-2022 NMS Supply List on our NMS Webpage at this link.

7. All 2021-2022 Orientation Videos are on our NMS Website at this link.

Finally, parents always ask me what should their child do to prepare their child for middle school. I am happy to tell you that they are ready for middle school. Required summer reading, math worksheets, and assignments do not make the difference. Spending time outside, sharing memories with family, traveling, and recharging is exactly what they need. When school opens in August, we will be back in person 5 days a week. They will readjust soon enough and return to a “new normal” in middle school.

Enjoy your summer!
