- Fall Conferences: Fall conferences will be held on Monday November 22 virtually and Tuesday November 23 in-person at Nitschmann Middle School. We use an on-line scheduling system for conferences, which you can click here and schedule a conference. Please schedule a time for you and your child to attend conferences. Nearly 200 families have already signed up, so don’t delay!

Conference Scheduling Information
Dear Parents & Guardians,
It is time to schedule our conferences with students, parents/guardians, and teachers for the 1st Quarter.
At Nitschmann, we schedule these through a website. You need to use the link posted below to access our specific scheduling website. Do not just google the site – please click the link below.
All conferences on Monday, November 22, 2021 will be held virtually through Zoom from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. You can schedule a Zoom conference by using the website below. The teacher will send you and your child a Zoom link to connect online at the time you select.
All conferences on Tuesday November 23, 2021 will be held in person at Nitschmann Middle School from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. You can schedule a in-person conference by using the website below. If you need to bring a younger child with you, we will have an activity table supervised by staff so you and your middle school child can attend the conference.

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) See our welcome letter on the NMS Website! Congratulations to our Pride of the Lions winners for the month: Caleb Hutchinson, Naomi Pomales, and Samuel Williams. Charging laptops has improved dramatically! We have implemented a charging policy for the kids, and they have responded well. We have also updated our grading policy for the second quarter. This change was discussed in September at Open House regarding any late work. Please review information in the Course Headquarters in Schoology for the update, and discuss with your student. There has been a change to the school schedule for 11/22 and 11/23, please be aware of the students’ half-days being turned to days at home. Have a great week!

We are proud to announce our October Pride of the Lions: Aziel Capeles-Reyes and Alexis Flores. Congratulations to both of them. Way to Lead the Way. As we enter the 2nd marking period we asked students to reflect on how the 1st marking period went. One of the most common lessons learned from the 1st marking period was to not fall behind as it is difficult to catch back up and stay on top of the daily assignments at the same time. If you have not done so already, establish a routine of checking your schoology grade report several times per week and most importantly set up a regular schedule of homework time (about a half hour to and hour a night). If working from home is a problem you can reach out to us to stay after or before school or the school offers a supervised work environment in the Library from 7:30 to 8:00 am and from 3:05 to 4:00 pm in the library every school day. There is help here for you – take advantage of it!!

Let’s stay on top of our work this quarter! Should you need any extra help, just check with one of your teachers to make arrangements to either come before school or stay after.
Team Kutztown (7th)(Twitter @TeamKutztown) – English (Mr. Falteich) – The first quarter is now closed. This week’s focus will be on narrative poetry, figures of speech, and poetic sound devices. Social Studies (Mr. Danyi) – We will finish Unit 2 on the USA and Canada this week. The focus will be on the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Math (Mrs. Evancho) – We are going to look at percents, decimals and fractions and how to go from one form to another. English (Mrs. Gómez)~Student’s next Novel Overview Form will be due on Wednesday, 11/17. We are currently reading a story titled, “Museum Indians.” Students have researched Native American tribes. We will be moving onto our next story, “The Walking Dance” later this week. Students will take a lead and teach classmates about terms pertaining to the story.
Science (Mr. Pearson) – This week students will have a test on measuring in the metric system on Wednesday, November 10th. After that, we will begin our next unit on the scientific method.
Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Getz) DONATIONS NEEDED: Team Penn State is in need of gallon size baggies for our tie dying activity. If you are able, please send in a box with your child. Thank you in advance. Mrs. Markovic (social studies) -. We will finish Unit 2 on the USA and Canada this week. The focus will be on the rights and responsibilities of citizens. . Mr. Downey (ELA) -We will be discussing Non-fiction reading strategies, text structures and main idea concepts. Mrs. Getz (ELA) – Vocabulary Quiz – Tuesday 11/9, argumentative paper (introduction, body #1, and body #2) due by the end of class Monday. The finished paper is due 11/18. Mrs Lafey (Math) – Students in periods 3,6 and 9 are working with proportional relationships and have a quiz Wednesday on the first 4 sections of the unit. This will be the first score for the 2nd quarter. Students in periods 2 and 8 are finishing their unit on proportional relationships with a unit test on Monday which will be the last score for the 1st marking period. Their next unit will be about percents and begin by reviewing how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents. Mr. Khalife (Science) – We will be finishing up the metric system unit with a few days of review worksheets and review games. On Friday Nov. 12th, we will be taking a unit test on the metric system.

SUPPLIES: Please check with your student to see that they have necessary supplies: writing tool, notebooks, glue sticks, ear buds, extra mask. We’re starting to notice a lot of students do not have these items with them!
History: As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday that means the start of the Oral History project. This project will have students interview a person at least 63 years old. The assignment is posted in schoology with the grading rubric. Thanksgiving is a great time to complete the assignment. Mrs. Tannous and Mrs. Pogue’s ELA classes: We will start diving into our reading of our first book: Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Our focus for the novel will be on applying our knowledge of literary terms, sharing our personal reactions to the events and characters, and connecting the events in the book to the real world. It’s an exciting, interesting, and fun read for everyone! We will also be reflecting on our “Monkey’s Paw” paragraphs and continuing to practice how to correct run-on sentences. Science: We will continue our study of atoms; there will be a quiz midweek. Math: Algebra- working on linear equations. Math 8: introduction to Algebra.

The Bethlehem Public Library offers FREE tutoring Monday through Friday from 4:00-6:00pm. This AWESOME opportunity is put on by Moravian University students! You can drop off your child for any length of time to get any help in any subject they may need! Please email Mrs Hood or call the BAPL if you would like more information. In Mrs. Wallach’s ELA class, we finished reading Monster by Walter Dean Myers and students have taken the test. We will complete unit one and begin an interview project focused on the poem “Sympathy” and an excerpt from Ten Days in a Madhouse. Continue to check Schoology for grades and updates. In Mrs. Hinkel’s ELA class, we will continue reading our new mystery, “The Speckled Band,” focusing on close reading and literary analysis. Our final analysis assignment will be due on Friday, Nov. 12. We will also continue working on our new comma rule. We have a quiz scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 9. Advanced Math / Math 8 students will continue our discussion / practice on writing / solving equations from word problems. Algebra 1 students will continue our discussion / practice on writing / graphing linear equations (three different forms). In History, students will finish their group Body Biography projects. Students will take a look at colonial money and the Abolitionist Movement of the Southern Colonies. In Science, the students will be introduced to the Periodic Table. We will be working on a Stations Lab on Tues and Weds followed by notes on Thursday.

Lion Service Club (Advisor Mrs. McLaughlin) Lion Service Club started this past week. We had a great kick off. Students still interested in joining the Lion Service Club should pick up a permission slip and information sheet in Mrs. McLaughlin’s room 209. Lion Service Club will be after school the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month until 3:45.We will be working on activities such as organizing our 2nd Annual Blood Drive, The Clothing Closet, cards for the elderly for the holidays, etc. Hope to see you there.

Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Lafey)
MathCounts is a nationwide mathematics enrichment and competition program. Students in grades 6,7, and 8 are welcome to participate. Students involved in MathCounts will have the opportunity to work both independently and with other students on challenging problems. Our top students will earn the right to represent Nitschmann at the chapter competition in February where we face off against lots of other schools in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos and have the opportunity to win awards like college scholarships.
We meet on Thursdays after school in room 213 until 4:00. New students are welcome!

- Job well done taking out the Chargers at our night game and ending our season on a high note!
- You can turn in your Nitschmann uniforms into me in room 002 (on your way to encore or health) at any time this week or next. Place the washed jersey and skirt in a shopping bag and I will use the jersey number to check your return. All uniforms must be returned by the End of the Season Celebration, November 17th (see details below)
- Some of you may be interested in winter practices or league play. I am in the processing of looking into options and I will email when I get more information.
- We will be having an End-of-the-Season Celebration in Nitschmann’s Cafe after school on November 17th. I will provide pizza for the girls but I ask that each member sign up to bring a small something to help with the party. Look for the Sign-up Genius in another email.

Masks are required to enter any BASD building at this time. There is a growing number of music students arriving for rehearsal without a mask for school.
Band and jazz band students MUST have their blue performance mask for rehearsal. We will be spending our entire rehearsal inside preparing for future events. If your child has lost his or her mask, please let me know and I’ll obtain a replacement. You will have to pay $12 for the replacement mask.
ALL wind players must have their instrument bell cover for rehearsal. If your child lost their bell cover please let me know and I will get you a replacement. You will need to pay for the replacement bell cover.

Then join the Nitschmann Glee Club! Click here to see our choral groups in action! Glee Club rehearses every Tues.,Wed. and Thurs .at 7:15 AM in room 141. Instrumental students are excused to attend their rehearsals. We also rehearse during Lion’s Pride time, every day 1. Nitschmann Singers is our smaller, auditioned ensemble that sings more challenging repertoire.They have their own rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-4:00 PM. All Nitschmann Singers are also Glee Club members. Nitschmann Singers attend Glee Club rehearsal every Wednesday morning at 7:15 AM and also during Lion’s Pride on day 1.
