BASD E-News (Dr. Roy)  The BASD e-News is designed to highlight BASD student and staff achievements and share events and activities going on in the BASD and the Lehigh Valley. It is our hope that you find it informative. The latest edition, which spotlights James Buchanan Elementary School Staff who are Built by Bethlehem, is available at March 8, 2019 Edition of the BASD e-News.

 

Writing contest for No Place For Hate-  Work turned in to Ms. Sierra by March 11 will be sent together. We are delighted to announce the Anti-Defamation League’s Spring 2019 Student Essay Contest, generously sponsored by TD Bank. Respecting others’ differences and celebrating diversity have always been a part of the Anti-Defamation League’s mission and the theme of No Place for Hate. The Spring 2019 Essay Contest is asking students to write a personal essay reflecting on the following topic: Imagine that someone your age from a country with a completely different language, religion and culture than America moves into your neighborhood and joins your class at school.  What would you do to make that person feel welcome? The essay contest is open to students in grades 5-8 in No Place for Hate schools.Essays will be judged in two divisions: students in grades 5-6 in Division I and students in grades 7-8 in Division II. The Grand Prize winner in each Division will receive a $250 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card and the Runner-Up in each Division will receive a $50 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card. All essays must be postmarked by Friday, March 15, 2019.  See Ms. Sierra for more details

 

Geography Bee (Hess) – Seventh grader and school Geography Bee champion Rowan Walters took a state qualifying exam in February.  The results of that test are in and I’m excited to announce that Rowan qualified!! That’s means he was in the top 100 in the state, although they did not give his exact rank.  The state competition will be held on Friday, March 29th at the state museum in Harrisburg. If you see Rowan, congratulate him and ask him an obscure geography question!!

Honors Declarations (Mayes) Dear Parents & Guardians of 8th Grade Students, I have sent your children the link to their BASD Google account to declare that if they are interested in taking Honors courses at Liberty High School for the 2019-2020 school year. There is no paper form, so your child will need to go into a website from their BASD Google account and declare their interest. I would recommend that you talk with your child about these courses to make sure they are declaring for the right courses for 9th grade. This is due no later than March 15, 2019, so they should get started on it ASAP!

Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School FAST TRACK Applications are also due to Mrs. Litak in the SSC by Friday April 5th, 2019.

Academic Team Updates

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette) Our first deadline for the End of the Year field trip has come and gone.  If you have not completed the permission slip and made at least a partial payment, the final payment must be in by April 5th so that we can order our tickets and secure bussing in time.  Please have your child turn this in to their homeroom teacher as soon as possible if they haven’t already done so.

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh)  Our Medieval Times field trip is May 22nd.  The cost of the trip is $40 a person. Permission slips have been sent home several weeks ago but we have gotten very few back as of yet. Please ask your child about it and have them see their homeroom teacher if they need another copy. We also have our 6th grade dance this coming Friday March 15th  from 6:00 to 8:00pm and the 6th grade is running a bowling night at Towne and Country Lanes Friday March 29th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. If interested tickets will be sold at during lunch periods this week. As always, please keep an eye on the Home Access Center and their planners in order to monitor your child’s grades.  Remember an hour a night of homework is all it should take. Try to help your child stick to this important habit.

Team Moravian (6th) – (Twitter @NMSTeam Moravian and Facebook@NMSTeamMoravian) The Moravian Science Day has been rescheduled for March 14th.  Please make sure to pack a lunch or bring $5 for lunch at the college. This is a walking trip so please dress appropriately. In social studies, all students are working on projects focusing on ancient Egypt.  They are researching topics that interest them. The goal is to complete 150 points. Everyone should be working on their fourth assignments at this time. Budget your time and work on a part each day. Please stay on top of Home Access Center and check grades regularly. OREO scores are still used daily, so please check those planners and aim for our next team reward!  

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown) ELA (Mr. Falteich) – At this time, student essays on

12 Angry Men are overdue. This week we will begin our research/public speaking unit. Students will learn several different types of speech introductions and begin doing their research for a 3-4 minute persuasive speech. The speeches will not be delivered until all research is done and the speeches are written (5-7 days).  

Science (Mr. Pearson) – Students will continue learning about the location, structure, and function of various organelles found in typical plant and animal cells this week.  The following week of March 18th, there will be a test on the last two sections, which covered the discovery of cells and location, structure, and function of cell organelles.

Team Penn State (7th) Follow us on social media!! (Twitter @NMSPennState) (Facebook @NMSTeamPennState) (Instagram pennstatenms)  ELA – Periods 1, 2 & 5 will begin a novel, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie. Periods 7 & 8 will continue the novel, Notes from the Midnight Driver. All classes will have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, March 12th.. SCIENCE- Students will be finalizing the genetics unit this week with learning about cloning, gene therapy, transgenic organisms and our epigenome. Unit test is scheduled for Monday,  March 18th.READING-  We will begin a new novel, The Spies of Mississippi, this week. Non-fiction reading strategies will be reviewed and discussed.   MATH – Students in periods 1,2,5 and 7 have a quiz on Monday on solving multi-step equations and two-step equation word problems.  The rest of the week will be devoted to solving and graphing inequalities. Period 8 is continuing to work on their probability unit.  SOCIAL STUDIES- Students will be learning about Mexico, Middle America and the Caribbean.  Their ABC country books will be due Friday March 8.

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @NMSTeamESU) Remember to get your Hershey money and forms turned in. Constitution Unit!! History classes are finally reached our unit on the Constitution Era. Students will begin learning the Preamble to the Constitution.  Book reports are due on March 27. Reading classes will continue to progress through part 2 of Soldier X. ELA: Sadly, we have finally finished Of Mice and Men! We will watching the rest of the movie next week. Then, will will begin our writing journey analyzing the story using textual evidence to support students thesis. We have been work on this slowly since the beginning of the unit; students will be putting all the pieces together, and the paper will be worth 50 points. Students are expected to hand in their work in a timely manner or points will be taken off. If there is an issue that may arise, it is their responsibility to inform their teacher. Students are more than welcome to stay after on Mondays and Wednesdays (or upon request) if they are confused or would like additional help on this assignment.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS) –   History classes will be investigating and assessing the SIX key events of Jefferson’s Presidency including the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Unit 5 Assessment on Monday. Study Guide is available in Schoology and as a hard copy.  Please be sure your child has HEADPHONES with them.  This announcement to students and parents has been made since August.   Reading classes are continuing our unit on fiction. We are working on elements of fiction and analyzing fiction text. We are reading the novel, The Contender and working on theme analysis and literary elements. My period 3 class will have a notebook quiz next week so students should be checking their notebooks for accuracy and staying after if needed. Algebra 1 classes will work on Exponential Functions, Compound Interest and Geometric Sequences.  Both IXL and Math XL assignments are posted in Schoology with due dates. Quiz next week. Math 8th students will continue with Unit 6 – Angle Relationships. IXL assignments are posted in Schoology with due dates. Quiz next week. In ELA classes, we say goodbye to Miss Nieves on Monday. We enjoyed having her in class and wish her well in her next placement. This week Periods 1, 3, 5, and 8 have a quiz on active and passive voice on Monday. We will begin our argumentative unit by reading a short story and  debating the character’s fate at the end of the week. In Science, we will be continuing Newton’s Laws of Motion. HERSHEY Park forms and money are NOW BEING COLLECTED.

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Parents, please mark these classes on your home calendar, and if possible, try to avoid scheduling after school appointments if your child is taking a class. Parents need to pick up their children at 6 p.m. promptly at Nitschmann’s main entrance.  Note: there is no class on Tuesdays, March 12 and April 9. The last Tuesday class will be on April 16, which is a make up from the snow cancellation. The last Thursday Art Smart will be on April 4. Thank you.

French Club (Advisor Mrs. Lare) Thank you to all the students and parents who helped provide refreshments for the class Mardi Gras celebrations. –  French Club students will be spending the next few weeks preparing for Team Temple’s International Night on April 11. We’ll be looking for cooks, bakers, artists, videographers, and musicians. Please be sure to ask your child how he or she will be contributing and participating in International Night.

French Trip to Quebec (Advisor Mr.s Lare) – Over the next few weeks students will be working to put together a visual presentation of Nitschmann’s first winter trip to Quebec. –  Madame Lare has a couple items that were left behind. If your child is missing something from the trip, please contact Madame Lare at alare@basdschools.org

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher)  Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 13,  2018, from 3:05 till 5:00 P.M. in the library.  We will meet until 5 P.M. each week now through April 10 . Thank you to those parents who donated a gift cards  for our “pot of gold” fundraiser! The students loved it! The bags of gold were delivered at the end of the day this past Friday. We are meeting as teams and preparing for the competition! It is mandatory that all students  attend each week from now until the competition. The competition is on April 11, 2019 at Easton High School. Info will be sent home in 3 weeks about parents attending the competition. T-Shirts were ordered!

Spain Trip (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) This is the last chance to sign up for our 8-Day trip to Spain in June. Trip dates are June 14 to June 21st. We will begin our journey in Barcelona and work our way to Madrid. We will get to experience an authentic flamenco lesson, as well as one of the oldest cities in the world, Toledo. Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana)  We are meeting Tuesday after school and will be continuing our work for International Night. If you have a song or activity planned for that night, make sure to be prepared to teach it to others. We will be working on our crafts and posters for the night, as well as props for the stories. This meeting is mandatory.

5) LHS BAGPIPES

   -LHS bagpipe lessons are on Wednesdays, in the LHS band room beginning at 3:15 PM or shortly thereafter.

  – THey are looking for students who did not make the band on their instrument or currently do not play an instrument to come out and learn bagpipes.

 

6)  BASD INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC ICE-SKATING

  – Bethlehem Ice Rink – Illicks Mill Road

  – Sunday, March 17, 5-7 pm

  – Free entry for students

  – Ice skate rental – $3.00 if needed

  – Snack bar will be open

7)  BROUGHAL JAZZ FESTIVAL – Friday, March 15

–       The festival begins at 6:25 PM.

–       Doors open at 6 PM.

–       Tickets are $5.00 adults / Students are free.

–       Nitschmann students should arrive by 6:30 PM.

–       Nitschmann warm-up time is 7:10 PM.

–       Nitschmann performance time is 7:30 PM.

–       Awards are scheduled for 10:10 PM.

–       Uniform for all jazz events is:  black bottom, white tux shirt, black bow-tie

–       Students may leave following the Nitschmann performance

 

8)  WINTER COLOR GUARD PERFORMANCE

  – This performance has been rescheduled for March 19 at 8 PM.

  – Students performing should report at 7 PM.

 

9) WASHINGTON, D.C. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE BUS TICKETS

– Parents and family member who would like to travel to the band’s performance at the Washington, D.C. Memorial Day Parade can purchase bus seats here, BUS SEAT REQUEST, for $40 per person.

10) LHSGB CONCERT TICKETS FOR 8TH GRADERS

   – 8th grade students who are going to be members of the Liberty band or orchestra next year are eligible to receive a free ticket to either the Friday or Saturday  Liberty night band concert on March 29 & March 30.

– Ticket requests must be received by March 18th.

COLOR GUARD (formerly BANDFRONT) – (Advisor Mrs. Hriniak) Regular rehearsals Monday and Thursday.  The Winter Guard performance has been rescheduled for March 19.  If you are in BOTH guard and band, your concert band day is Monday and your guard day is Thursday.   See email updates for more information.
