  • We will be welcoming author Matthew Landis to Nitschmann on Friday for our annual Author Day assemblies! If your child is interested, there are forms to order his books this week at school.
  • Tickets are on sale for our BASD Middle School Dance @ Liberty High School this Friday night. Tickets are on sale at lunches from Officer Joniec for $8.
  • Join us for our Nitschmann Parent Group Meeting on Monday @ 6:30pm in the Library.

BASD E-News (Dr. Roy)  We hope you take a moment to view this week’s edition of the BASD e-News to see how you can help to reduce the student lunch debt in BASD school by donating gently used and new shoes. Also included is a great recipe for on Vegetable Orzo Soup. For those who crave that sweet treat, watch the Wellness 101 video presented by St. Luke’s Health Network on How to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth without Destroying Your Health.  I hope you enjoy it! Shoe Collection Kindness is Magic, Inc. is collecting gently used and new shoes to raise money to pay off BASD lunch account debt. All shoes may be placed in the labeled box located in the Student Service Center from now until March 28th. Please see attached flyer for details. 

 

3-3 Basketball Tournament (Mayes) LINK TO REGISTER Dear Students,This March, we will be hosting a 3-3 basketball tournament in honor of March Madness! You and your friends can sign up as a team. Teams must have 3 students on them. All students in all grades are eligible to play.  The team captain for your team should complete the form below to register for the 2020 NMS March Madness 3-3 Basketball Tournament. The tournament will be held on Tuesday & Thursday mornings in between 7:15 am and 7:45 am in March 2020. Bus transportation is not provided to morning basketball for the tournament.  Once we have the list of teams, Dr. Mayes will build the tournament bracket and assign dates/times for games. This tournament bracket will be posted in the gymnasium lobby. The cost for the tournament is $5 per team, which will cover awards & a celebration breakfast at the end of the tournament. Tournament money should be paid to the Main Office in an envelope with your team name on it.  Registration will end on Thursday, February 13. Good luck!

Academic Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) The third quarter is here! Now is a great time to clean out bookbags, lockers and folders.  Let’s start off the 2nd half of the year on the right foot.  

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  On Friday we held our monthly Team Celebration/Work day. We are pleased to say the overwhelming majority of our students worked very productively during our work time and got to participate in playing board games as well as several activities in the Gym. We also recognized our January Pride of Lions: Dresden Leigeb, Jeniya Zayas, and Alayna Issa; as well as our Mountain Hawk Award winners: Selman Eris and Theresa-Ann Cao. Congratulations on their hard work. As we enter February, it is nice to see that most of our students are off to a good start for the 3rd quarter and have made up all back assignments. Please log on to Schoology Pearson, and Study Sync frequently with your child to monitor your his/her progress. Let’s keep those plates clean!!!

Students continue to work on their Eyptian projects. They should now be working on the second project that they want to submit for a grade on Monday, February 3rd. Please ask them what they are currently working on. 

Some students continue to miss math assignments. Please look at Schoology to see which assignments have not been turned in. We are working to schedule our second Moravian trip.  We are tentatively scheduled for February. We will share more information as it becomes available.

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Hess) –English -(Falteich) – periods 2,3, 8, and 9 have a Response to Literature Essay due this week. Period 2’s essay is due on Wednesday, and period 8’s is due on Friday. Period 6 will complete the novel, We Beat the Street and begin a grammar unit on noun and pronoun usage. Math (Mrs. Van Woert) – Periods 6 & 9, who did not have their Math quiz this past Friday, will take it this Monday, February 3rd.  In addition, Periods 2, 3, 6, & 9 will take Unit Test #5 on Friday, February 7th. Science (Mr. Pearson) – This coming week, students will be learning about the chemical compounds that compose all living things.

 

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Miller) Students are required to have their own pair of earbuds to use in classes.  English (Getz)  We are currently reading the novel We Beat the Street. This week, we will begin our Unit #3 writing assignment based on an occupation or college admission for the future. Science: Plant mitosis lab is due on Monday, Feb 3. This week we will be connecting the cell cycle with cancer and complete a virtual lab on identifying cells. A review will occur at the end of the week for an assessment on Monday, Feb. 10 Social Studies: Canada final assessment is due Thursday 1/23. Math: Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Students in Periods 2,3,and 9 have their unit test on Thursday. Periods 6 and 8 are working with inequalities.

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @@nmsteamesu Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8 Hershey Park money is now being collected.  Final due date for permission form and payment is March 27. Ice skating money is due by Tuesday, February 11.  We will be ice skating on Thursday, February 13. History classes will be moving into the Revolutionary War unit. We will begin with a textual study of the Declaration of Independence this week. ELA classes will begin Unit 3 in StudySync. We will continue with Part 2 of Soldier X.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. HoodHershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. If you have any questions about the Hershey Park trip, please feel free to email Mrs. Hood.  Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th. In History class, students will be using KAMI, the leading PDF and document annotation app for schools, to learn about the battles of the American Revolution.  In Science class, we will be Counting Atoms and Elements. Quiz on Tues. In Math 8 classes,Solving Systems of Equations (3 methods).  In Algebra class, graphing Absolute Value and Piecewise Functions.  In Advance Math class, Solving Systems of Equations (3 methods).  In English class (Hinkel and Wallach) we have finished unit 2 of StudySync and are working on our literary analysis essay. Please be sure to check StudySync daily for any missed or incomplete assignments. Students in the block classes are continuing to read The Contender and should be keeping up with the guiding reading questions on Schoology. Students in period 3/6 are still reading You Don’t Know Me and have started current events presentations. All classes will be starting Unit 3 of StudySync next week. Please be sure students have their own set of earbuds so they can listen to the text online and watch the content-related videos!  Please encourage your child to check Schoology for grades, assignments and future events. It is their responsibility to communicate with teachers for clarification and if an absence occurs.

AM Basketball (Mayes) Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:15am to 7:45am. All students are required to attend breakfast after practice. Doors only open at 7:15am, so do not come late!

Art Club (Advisors Mrs. Kozero/Mrs. Lund)Our next meeting is Monday, February 10,  after school in Room 011 (Mrs. Lund’s Art room). 

  

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory have resumed on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.  These classes run for 8 weeks, are free, and open to all students. There are still some openings in some classes. Students must commit to attending all classes and parents must be able to pick up their child at Nitschmann at 6 p.m. If interested, please see Mrs. Lare in Room 317 ASAP to pick up information and a registration form.  Thank you.

 

Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Practice will be until 6 pm on Wednesday 2/5  and 2/12 after school. ALL PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY- $5 needed for Kobe shirt.

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201.PLease make sure you are signed up for an article on our second edition spreadsheet. We will begin working at a faster pace in order to complete articles by the given deadline, and will need to work outside of club time. 

 

Lion’s Pride Newspaper (Advisor Ms. Bouhana)– Baking Contest The newspaper will be hosting a baking challenge that is open to all students and the winner will receive a $30 Skyzone Gift Card. Interested students will bring in a home-made baked good on January 24th to the large group room. A panel of five teachers will taste all baked goods and cast their votes. National Junior Honor Society  (Advisors Mrs. Wallach/Mrs. Druckenmiller) (Twitter-@Njhs_Nitschmann; Instagram- @Njhs_Nistchmann ) Currently, the NJHS is running a short campaign to benefit local residents who are struggling with their heating bills. We are asking for donations this week and students who donate $1.00 will get a ticket to put into a jar at lunch to determine which teacher will get a pie in the face. This is a fun way to help give back to our community. Please help us out! We will begin our service project with LLS and collecting donations for blood cancer research. Look for details to come!

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) (Advisor Mr. Amen)  Meeting after school Friday, January 10th.  Online registration is due on the 10th as well.  Please make sure all forms are in.

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Our next meeting is on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Congratulations to Sophia O’hara, Katie Bruno and Hadi Ali for winning the competition t-shirt design contest! Sophia and Katie’s  T-shirt design they both worked on will be on the back of the competition shirts! Hadi’s will be on the front of the competition shirts. We now have a twitter account! It is Nitschmann Reading Olympics @NMSReadOlympics .  We will be sharing things on there throughout the year so please follow us! The competition is on Thursday,  April 16th, 2020. We continue to meet every Wednesday after school until 4 P.M. through the end of February to read, discuss, and write summaries about the books to help us prepare for the competition.  We will be meeting until 5 P.M. in March and April up until the competition. A schedule will be sent home for the last few weeks.

Save the Sea Turtles Club (Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Thanks to a group of very ambitious 7th graders we are continuing our Save the Sea Turtles Club this year!  We will meet Fridays after school until 4pm in room 307. Guess what? Nitschmann Middle School adopted a sea turtle this summer.  His name is Gerry and he is a resident sea turtle that lives in South Padre Island, Texas. We will have the opportunity to do a virtual field trip and check in on Gerry and the other resident sea turtles.  This club is open to grades 6, 7, & 8. We look forward to a great year full of lots of ideas and putting things in action to do our part in saving sea turtles!!

 

Ski & Snowboard Club (Advisors Mr. Downey) See you Monday night!  Reminders; The bus will depart at 4:10.  Items can be stored in Mr. Downey’s room for the day.  Everybody was off the mountain in time, thanks!! 2 more meetings. If you missed a Monday, you can make up on another non-holiday Monday or March.    

 

Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201. We will finish our January bulletin board, and work on the remaining months of the year. I will be giving everyone a permission slip for our club trip on March 30th. Make sure to bring it back as soon as possible. If you want to stop by and get it before our meeting, even better.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    1. All-City band rehearsal is for selected students only. 

 

  • All-City band rehearsal is on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 7:15 am, at Northeast Middle School
  • Students report directly to Northeast with their instrument and are bused back to Nitschmann
  • Students will return to Nitschmann by 12:00 on Tuesday
  • Students will return to Nitschmann by 11:00 on Wednesday
  • Tickets are $3.00 per person.  See Mr. Zettlemoyer for tickets.
  • The concert is Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
  • Students report to Northeast by 7:00 pm in their band uniform

Do you know a student who loves to sing? Our Glee Club family is now accepting new members for the spring! Anyone is welcome to join. The only requirement is a commitment to rehearsals as follows: 7:15 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Instrumental students are excused to go to their rehearsals, joining us on alternate mornings. All choral groups rehearse during day 1 activity periods. Joining Glee Club is a great way to prepare for Nitschmann Singer auditions at the end of the school year. Not able to come before school? Contact Mrs. de Vries for a new opportunity.

A reminder for all students who participate in athletics that keeping your grades up is a requirement of participating at Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty High School. Grades are check bi-weekly by Student Services.
