Baking Contest The newspaper will be hosting a baking challenge that is open to all students and the winner will receive a $30 Skyzone Gift Card. Interested students will bring in a home-made baked good on February 18th to the large group room. A panel of five teachers will taste all baked goods and cast their votes. Our next meeting will be Monday, March 16th at 6:30 PM in the Library.  After our regular meeting, the administration from Liberty High School will be on hand to discuss the transition from 8th grade at Nitschmann to 9th grade at Liberty.  All parents are welcome, but parents of 8th grade students are encouraged to attend. Academic Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) Midquarter is quickly approaching.  Please remind the students to check on Schoology for grades and missing assignments. Students will be turning in their first Egypt project on Tuesday. Ask your child about the novel we are currently reading in English. 

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  

We are approaching the middle of the 3rd marking period. Most students were totally caught up on work as of the end of January, but we are beginning to see some of them fall behind again. Please log on to Schoology Pearson, and Study Sync frequently with your child to monitor your his/her progress.

Our Moravian trip has been tentatively rescheduled for March 20th.  Students will be allowed to purchase lunch on campus for $5 or bring a bagged lunch.

Students are going to be turning in their fourth social studies project on Monday. Please check Schoology for missed assignments in all classes.

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Hess) – Team – The Team Kutztown Annual Family Pasta and Meatball Dinner has been rescheduled. The new date for the dinner is Thursday, March 5, 2020, at 5:00 in the school cafeteria. Please RSVP by Friday, February 28, 2020. Students were given the new attendance form on Friday in class.  Science (Mr. Pearson) – This coming week, Periods 6, 8, & 9 will continue to learn about the chemical compounds that compose all living things.  The following week of February 24th, they will have a test on this material. There will be more information in next week’s email.  Periods 2 & 3 will have their test this coming Wednesday, February 19th. These students will then be learning about the discovery of cells. English (Falteich) – This week students will continue their dramatic reading of the play, 12 Angry Men. The focus of this literature unit includes fictional characterization, theme, and courtroom terminology. The classes that have finished the reading of the play are working on a characterization slide project on each of the 12 jurors.

 

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. Miller) SCIENCE (MILLER)-  All classes have the  family traits lab due on MONDAY 2/24. Next week, the students will learn some additional types of inheritance patterns. Each student will be assigned a genetic disorder to research this week and present a slide presentation Wed. March 4. ENGLISH (GETZ) – Period 2/3 and 8/9 Students will continue Unit #3 Study Sync. They will also finish up their argumentative presentations. Presentations will be Thursday and Friday. Students should be practicing at home. Vocabulary Quiz – Tuesday. Period 6 – students will continue Unit #3 Study Sync and complete their “college entrance essays”. Vocabulary Quiz – Tuesday. MATH – Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Periods 6 and 8 have a short quiz on Monday and will be finishing their study of probability with a unit test on Friday.  Periods 2,3 and 9 are continuing to solve equations. Students who struggled with last week’s quiz on two-step equations should make a plan to stay after school for help this week.

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @@nmsteamesu Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8 Hershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th. 8th Grade students will be travelling to Philadelphia and the United States Constitution Center on February 27th or March 5th. The students are divided in 2 groups and the lists are available on Schoology. All details were sent in an email and are on Schoology. English classes will be reading Part 3 of Soldier X and also continuing with Unit 3 of StudySync.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. HoodHershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. If you have any questions about the Hershey Park trip, please feel free to email Mrs. Hood.  Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th.  NO FORMS OR PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.  Tickets are ordered that day! In History class, students will be heading to The United States Constitution Center in Philadelphia on February 25th and 26th to take part in the Student Ambassadors Program.  An email was sent out to ALL PARENTS and STUDENTS regarding the trip. If you have any questions, please ask your child, as we went over the details in class. Over the next week or two, we will take a look at the significance of the Six Big ideas in the Constitution historically and for Americans today.   In Science class  we are exploring Newton’s 2nd and 3rd Laws. Test on All of Newton’s Laws will be on March 6th.   In Math 8 classes,Solving Systems of Equations (word problems) – Unit 5 Test the following week – start reviewing for the Unit 1-4 Benchmark test.  In Algebra class, Exponents and Exponential Functions – Quiz Thursday.  In Advance Math class, Solving Systems of Equations (Word Problems) – Quiz Thursday – Unit 5 Test the following week – start reviewing for the Unit 1-4 Benchmark test.  In English class (Hinkel and Wallach) we are working on Unit 3 of StudySync. We will be focusing on informational text and all classes will be starting to read a new novel, A Night to Remember. Students have a notebook quiz on Monday and a Louisiana map paper due on Monday. Look for updates via Schoology. Please be sure to check StudySync daily for any missed or incomplete assignments. Please be sure students have their own set of earbuds so they can listen to the text online and watch the content-related videos!  Please encourage your child to check Schoology for grades, assignments and future events. It is their responsibility to communicate with teachers for clarification and if an absence occurs.

AM Basketball (Mayes) Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:15am to 7:45am. All students are required to attend breakfast after practice. Doors only open at 7:15am, so do not come late!

 

Anime Club (Advisors Ms. Fehr/Mrs. WallachThe next meeting is March 16th in room 104.

 

Art Club (Advisors Mrs. Kozero/Mrs. Lund)Our next meeting is Monday, February 10,  after school in Room 011 (Mrs. Lund’s Art room). 

  

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory have resumed on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.  These classes run for 8 weeks, are free, and open to all students. There are still some openings in some classes. Students must commit to attending all classes and parents must be able to pick up their child at Nitschmann at 6 p.m. If interested, please see Mrs. Lare in Room 317 ASAP to pick up information and a registration form.  Thank you.

 

Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Practice will resume Wed. until 5pm in the cafeteria.

 

French Club – On Monday,  February 3 French Club will be celebrating  La Chandeleur, a day when people eat lots of crepes in France!  Please consider sending in some crepes and/or crepe fillings to share with French Club students. Merci en avance!

 

German Club (Advisor Mrs. Sofka) German club meets every day 1 during 1st period in Mrs. Sofka’s room 313. Our next meeting is Monday, 3/2. German club is currently full due to space and is limited to Mrs. Sofka and Ms. Schwartz’s students only. Please see Mrs. Sofka if you are still interested in joining.

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201.PLease make sure you are signed up for an article on our third edition spreadsheet. We will begin working at a faster pace in order to complete articles by the given deadline, and will need to work outside of club time. 

 

Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Novatnak Lafey) Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Congratulations on a great showing at the Lehigh Valley Chapter MathCounts competition.  Team members Mahdi Ali, Josh Freedman, Owen Lansing and Stephanie Zheng came in 12th out of all the schools in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos.  Josh was our top student, he came in 49th out of everyone there. Our other competitors were Hadi Ali, Ben Blum, Ethan Caine and Neil Rana. All of our Nitschmann students ranked in the top half of the students in attendance.  It was a great day!

We will be sponsoring a dance along with the Reading Olympics team on May 15th.  We’ll need students to volunteer to help when we get closer to the date.

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) (Advisor Mr. Amen)  Meeting after school Friday, January 10th.  Online registration is due on the 10th as well.  Please make sure all forms are in.

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Our next meeting is on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. We did well with our Valentine carnation flower sale! Thank you to all of the students who sold flower cards over the three lunch periods for a week and delivered the flowers on Thursday.  We now have a twitter account! It is Nitschmann Reading Olympics @NMSReadOlympics . We will be sharing things on there throughout the year so please follow us! The competition is on Thursday,  April 16th, 2020. We continue to meet every Wednesday after school until 4 P.M. through the end of February to read, discuss, and write summaries about the books to help us prepare for the competition.  We will be meeting until 5 P.M. in March and April up until the competition. A schedule will be sent home for the last few weeks.

Save the Sea Turtles Club (Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Thanks to a group of very ambitious 7th graders we are continuing our Save the Sea Turtles Club this year!  We will meet Fridays after school until 4pm in room 307. Guess what? Nitschmann Middle School adopted a sea turtle this summer.  His name is Gerry and he is a resident sea turtle that lives in South Padre Island, Texas. We will have the opportunity to do a virtual field trip and check in on Gerry and the other resident sea turtles.  This club is open to grades 6, 7, & 8. We look forward to a great year full of lots of ideas and putting things in action to do our part in saving sea turtles!!

 

Ski & Snowboard Club (Advisors Mr. Downey and Mrs. Druckenmiller) Blue Mountain has been blowing snow for 24 hours!!!  This coming Monday will be our last official meeting and the last bus trip. If you missed a Monday, you can make up another (non-holiday) Monday or in March.    Ms. Weinert will be joining on Monday! I hope you can make our final meeting.  

 

Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will not meet after school this week. 

 

Step Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Practice will resume Tuesday in room 207 and Thursday in the cafeteria until 5pm.

The only requirement is a commitment to rehearsals as follows: 7:15 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Instrumental students are excused to go to their rehearsals, joining us on alternate mornings. All choral groups rehearse during day 1 activity periods. Joining Glee Club is a great way to prepare for Nitschmann Singer auditions at the end of the school year. Not able to come before school? Contact Mrs. de Vries for a new opportunity.

2/27  THURSDAY     7:15 AM Rehearsal for Glee members not in Band (doors open at 7am)

        3:05-4:00 PM Singers rehearsal. Drama students attend Singers.

A reminder for all students who participate in athletics that keeping your grades up is a requirement of participating at Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty High School. Grades are check bi-weekly by Student Services.
