Join us as Nitschmann Dramatics perform Alice in Wonderland Jr and Northeast Dramatics perform Once on this Island Jr. View the videos spotlighting the performances in this week’s edition of the BASD e-News along with the dates and times of the performances.  Just announced, the BASD 2020-2021 school year starts on Monday, August 31, 2020, for students. Academic Team Updates 

Team Lafayette (6th) (Twitter @NMSLafayette Team Leader Mrs. Hackman) Midquarter is quickly approaching.  Please remind the students to check on Schoology for grades and missing assignments. Egypt Project #2 is due Tuesday. Ask your child about the novel we are currently reading in English. 

 

Team Lehigh (6th) (Twitter @NMSTeamLehigh Team Leader Mrs. Oliver)  We are officially at the middle of the 3rd marking period. Please check Schoology, Study Sync, and Pearson to see your child’s current grade and to check on any missing work. Math progress reports were sent home to be signed as well.  Please sign and return as soon as possible. We also had much to be proud of and recognize over the past several weeks at our monthly team celebration. Let’s start with our February Pride of the Lions and Mountain Hawk winners for the month: Adrianna O’Neill, Colin Panik, Andrew Riggs, and Brady Carvajal (Brady will also be representing us at the upcoming Reading Olympics).  We would also like to give a shout out to our members of the Dance/Step team: Hendrix Bromfield and Rahmell Johnson; and our Color Guard: McKenna Boyle and Eliana Episcopio. Each of these groups also had performances over the past week. Finally, but definitely not least, we would like to congratulate Mrs. Hriniak and all of our Team Lehigh members of the Drama Club (Andrew Bays, Laila Bryant, Lauren Cheatham, Michaela Deemer, Lila Dobrowolski, William Garcia, Denise Green, Kaedon Hall, Alexander Koch, Robert Leuthardt, Jayden Smith-Perez, and Jeniya Zayas) for their outstanding performance of Alice Jr. and Wonderland this weekend.

Our Moravian trip has been tentatively rescheduled for March 20th.  Students will be allowed to purchase lunch on campus for $5 or bring a bagged lunch. Students are going to be turning in their fourth social studies project on Monday. Please check Schoology for missed assignments in all classes.

 

Team Kutztown (7th) (Twitter @TeamKutztown Team Leader Mr. Hess) – Team – The Team Kutztown Annual Family Pasta and Meatball Dinner is this Thursday, March 5, 2020, at 5:00 PM in the school cafeteria.  If you would still like to come, please email any last minute RSVPs to one of us by the end of the day TOMORROWMath (Mrs. Van Woert) – There will be a test on Tuesday, March 3rd for Periods 2, 3, 6, & 9.  Science (Mr. Pearson) – Students will continue to learn about the different types of cells and the location, structure, and function of the various parts that make up a cell.   English (Mr. Falteich) – This week students will discuss the setting, theme, and characters from Farley Mowat’s – “Walk Well, My Brother.”  Periods 2,3,8, & 9 will be presenting their 12 Angry Men Characterization Slide Show Projects on Monday. All students should have completed detailed slides on 6 of the jurors from the play. Each slide must contain textual support. On Wednesday, Periods 2/3 and 8/9 will have a brief quiz on possessive noun usage. Looking ahead, Studysync Unit 4 Moment of Truth begins Monday, March 9, 2020. Extra help is available Monday, Tuesday, and Friday next week.

 

Team Penn State (7th) (Twitter @NMSPennState/Facebook @NMSTeamPennState/ Instagram pennstatenms Team Leader Mrs. MillerTEAM: There is a team reward on Friday morning for all students passing their courses at this time.  Also, on Friday, we will be watching “Lorenzo’s Oil (PG-13) . A true story about a family trying to save their son after learning about a genetic diagnosis (ALD). The movie reflects on our genetics unit as well as demonstrating how anyone (not just a scientist) can use the scientific method to hypothesize and attempt to solve real life problems. 

SCIENCE (MILLER)-  Genetic disorder slide presentation due Thursday March 6. ENGLISH (GETZ) – Period 2/3 and 8/9 Students will complete presentations on Monday. On Monday, ALL students will begin the Unit #3 assessment. MATH – Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Periods 6 and 8 are beginning a unit on geometry. Periods 2,3 and 9 have a quiz Monday on multi-step equations, including some word problems.  They will spend the rest of the week working with inequalities. Social Studies– All classes will be working on their  projects, please remind students to bring poster boards and other materials if needed.

 

Team East Stroudsburg (8th) (Twitter @@nmsteamesu Team Leader Mr. Amen Instagram @nmsteamesu8 Hershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th. 8th Grade students will be travelling to Philadelphia and the United States Constitution Center on February 27th or March 5th. The students are divided in 2 groups and the lists are available on Schoology. All details were sent in an email and are on Schoology. English classes will be reading Part 3 of Soldier X and also continuing with Unit 3 of StudySync.

 

Team Northampton (8th) (Twitter @TeamSpartanNMS Team Leader Mrs. HoodHershey PARK form and payment is NOW BEING ACCEPTED.  All students received their forms on January 6th. If you have any questions about the Hershey Park trip, please feel free to email Mrs. Hood.  Final DUE DATE for form and payment is March 27th.  NO FORMS OR PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.  Tickets are ordered that day! In History class, WE will continue looking at  the significance of the Six Big ideas in the Constitution historically and for Americans today.  The trip to the Constitution Center was a HUGE success! We will use that hands-on experience to enhance our learning moving forward.  In Science class  we are exploring Newton’s 2nd and 3rd Laws. Test on All of Newton’s Laws will be on March 6th.   In Math 8 classes, Solving Systems of Equations (word problems) – Unit 5 Test the following week – start reviewing for the Unit 1-4 Benchmark test.  In Algebra class, Exponents and Exponential Functions – Quiz Thursday.  In Advance Math class, Solving Systems of Equations (Word Problems) – Quiz Thursday – Unit 5 Test the following week – start reviewing for the Unit 1-4 Benchmark test.  In English class (Hinkel and Wallach) we are working on Unit 3 of StudySync. We will be focusing on informational text and all classes will be starting to read a new novel, A Night to Remember. Students have a notebook quiz on Monday and a Louisiana map paper due on Monday. Look for updates via Schoology. Please be sure to check StudySync daily for any missed or incomplete assignments. Please be sure students have their own set of earbuds so they can listen to the text online and watch the content-related videos!  Please encourage your child to check Schoology for grades, assignments and future events. It is their responsibility to communicate with teachers for clarification and if an absence occurs.

AM Basketball (Mayes) Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:15am to 7:45am. All students are required to attend breakfast after practice. Doors only open at 7:15am, so do not come late!

 

Anime Club (Advisors Ms. Fehr/Mrs. WallachThe next meeting is March 16th in room 104.

 

Art Club (Advisors Mrs. Kozero/Mrs. Lund)Our next meeting is Monday, March 9,  after school in Room 011 (Mrs. Lund’s Art room). 

  

Artsmart @ Banana Factory (Advisor Mrs. Lare)  Art Smart classes at the Banana Factory have resumed on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Kids are doing beautiful work!  Thank you, parents, for picking up your children at Nitschmann promptly at 6 p.m. 

 

Dance Team (Advisor Dr. Sierra) Practice will resume Wed. in the cafeteria until 5pm.

 

French Club – (Advisor Mrs. Lare) Thank you to students and parents who sent in refreshments and paper products for our Mardi Gras celebration; we had a great time! –  French Club students will be starting on a weeks long project to create a mural of the city of Paris!

 

German Club (Advisor Mrs. Sofka) German club meets every day 1 during 1st period in Mrs. Sofka’s room 313. Our next meeting is Monday, 3/2. German club is currently full due to space and is limited to Mrs. Sofka and Ms. Schwartz’s students only. Please see Mrs. Sofka if you are still interested in joining.

8th Grade Parents, in the coming months I will put out a sign-up genius for volunteering to help make our students 8th Grade Dance a success.  I will need volunteers to help with setup during the day, cleanup after the dance, and also volunteers for food/beverage donation. Please email me with any questions regarding the dance. More information to follow.

 

Lion Service Club (Advisor Mrs. McLaughlin) Our next meeting will be Wednesday, March 4th. We will finalize our next event at that time. See you then. 

 

Lion’s Pride (online school newspaper)  (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school in room 201.PLease make sure you are signed up for an article on our third edition spreadsheet. We will begin working at a faster pace in order to complete articles by the given deadline, and will need to work outside of club time. 

 

Mathcounts (Advisor Mrs. Novatnak Lafey) Miss Novatnak is now Mrs. Lafey, but her email is still the same.  Congratulations on a great showing at the Lehigh Valley Chapter MathCounts competition.  Team members Mahdi Ali, Josh Freedman, Owen Lansing and Stephanie Zheng came in 12th out of all the schools in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos.  Josh was our top student, he came in 49th out of everyone there. Our other competitors were Hadi Ali, Ben Blum, Ethan Caine and Neil Rana. All of our Nitschmann students ranked in the top half of the students in attendance.  It was a great day! There are additional Wawa hoagie coupons available for $4.50, they are good for a Wawa Shorti hoagie (regularly priced $4.59) and have no expiration date. Please help support our team!

We will be sponsoring a dance along with the Reading Olympics team on May 15th.  We’ll need students to volunteer to help when we get closer to the date.

 

National Junior Honor Society  (Advisors Mrs. Wallach/Mrs. Druckenmiller) (Twitter-@Njhs_Nitschmann; Instagram- @Njhs_Nistchmann ) We have officially started our LLS fundraiser to raise awareness and hope for a cure for blood cancer. Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) (Advisor Mr. Amen)  Meeting after school Friday, January 10th.  Online registration is due on the 10th as well.  Please make sure all forms are in.

 

Reading Olympics (Advisor – Mrs. Nonnemacher) Our next meeting is on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. We begin meeting until 5 P.M. from March 4th until the competition.  ( We do not have Reading Olympics on March 11, due to the teacher inservices. Our next meeting after that until 5 P.M. is on March 18) Teams have been picked! Congratulations to all of our Reading Olympic students! This week we will be picking individual team names,  and reading, discussing in our team groups. We now have a twitter account! It is: Nitschmann Reading Olympics @NMSReadOlympics . We will be sharing things on there throughout the year so please follow us! The competition at Easton High School is on Thursday, April 16th, 2020. More info will come home closer to that date.

Save the Sea Turtles Club (Advisor Mrs. Oliver)  Thanks to a group of very ambitious 7th graders we are continuing our Save the Sea Turtles Club this year!  We will meet Fridays after school until 4pm in room 307. Guess what? Nitschmann Middle School adopted a sea turtle this summer.  His name is Gerry and he is a resident sea turtle that lives in South Padre Island, Texas. We will have the opportunity to do a virtual field trip and check in on Gerry and the other resident sea turtles.  This club is open to grades 6, 7, & 8. We look forward to a great year full of lots of ideas and putting things in action to do our part in saving sea turtles!!

 

Ski & Snowboard Club (Advisors Mr. Downey and Mrs. Druckenmiller) If you missed a Monday, you can make up after March 2. Your unused passes are good ANY day.  

 

Spanish Club (Advisor Ms. Bouhana) We will meet after school on Thursday for a taco party in the large group. You’re more than welcome to bring in snacks and / or drinks.

Color Guard: Early morning rehearsal on Monday and Thursday at 7:15am.

LHS Majorette tryouts will be on APRIL 20 beginning at 3:30 pm in the LHS band room.

As usual – LHS will teach you 64 counts of routine.

Each person who auditions should prepare a 64 count LHS/traditional style routine with music accompaniment.

Our sound system can accommodate iphones, computers, etc.

All candidates need to bring their “most current” report card that contains their “current” GPA.

SPRING TRIP INFORMATION

 

  • The spring trip this year is for students who are in the orchestra, jazz band, and Nitschmann singers.
  • The final payment for Boston of  $70 is due on Wednesday, March 18. (4th payment of $60.00 for chaperones)

A reminder for all students who participate in athletics that keeping your grades up is a requirement of participating at Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty High School. Grades are check bi-weekly by Student Services. 

 

After-School Bus Transportation for Student-Athletes (5:15pm Pickup @ NMS)

Bus Run Stops for NMS Students West:  (Stops are as assigned based off the ridership) – Students MUST already receive BASD Bus Transportation home from school.

Girls Softball Tryouts will begin on Monday March 2, 2020 and conclude on Thursday March 5.

 -Tryouts on Monday and Tuesday will be held at Nitschmann Middle School and pickup time will be 4:45pm

-Tryouts on Wednesday and Thursday will be at Northwest Little League and pickup time will be 5:00pm

-Use the address 1500 Kaywin Ave, Bethlehem, PA 18018 for locating NWLL for pickup.

-All girls should be prepared with clothing and footwear for inside and outside. CLEATS MAY NOT BE WORN INSIDE BATTING CAGES. 

-Cuts will be made after the final tryout on Thursday.  

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A PIAA PHYSICAL FORM OR A RE-CERTIFICATION PAPER COMPLETED AND ON FILE AT NITSCHMANN PRIOR TO TRYING OUT

 

Co-Ed MS Soccer (Head Coach Mr. Rodenbach srodenbach@basdschools.org )

Coed Soccer Tryouts begin on Monday, March 2, 2020 through Friday, March 6, 2020 from 3:05 to 5:00. Tryouts will be held on the turf field or in the main gym depending on the weather. Participants need to be prepared to practice inside and out! 

Cuts will be on Friday, March 6th at the end of practice. 

Finally, ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A PIAA PHYSICAL FORM OR A RE-CERTIFICATION PAPER COMPLETED AND ON FILE AT NITSCHMANN PRIOR TO TRYING OUT!
