COUNSELORS: This week is National School Counseling Week. Did you know that the school counseling profession dates back to the early 1900s? At that time, school counselors were referred to as guidance counselors. Even through the 1950s and 1960s, “guidance counselors” were tasked with finding the “best and brightest” and “guiding” those students into STEM careers to advance America’s space program. Over time, the profession has changed and so has the title. In 1990, the American School Counseling Association advocated for the change in title from “guidance counselor” to school counselor. Change is hard. School counselors help students with a variety of social emotional, career, college, and academic topics to ensure the success of all students. Each day this week, the morning announcements will feature information about what school counselors do. Have you thanked your school counselor today?
